Victor Calvo-Sotelo, president of Correos (Spain) has officially introduced today the company’s new brand name and image. The word “Telegraphs” will be removed from the company’s name and the word “Correos” will become a commercial trademark. Spain's Azkar seeks new partners, possibly through capital increase

Transportes Azkar SA is seeking new partners to help finance the distribution group’s growth, Expansion reported citing unnamed sources close to the company.

Besides those companies already present in the sector, such as Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA and Actividades de Construccion y Servicios SA, “a Spanish investor group” could also be interested in taking a stake in Azkar, the paper said.

The possible investment could be carried out through a capital increase, Expansion said, noting that this would dilute the Somoza family’s 54.83 pct stake in the transport company.

Assempre accuses Correos of anti-competitive practices

The liberalisation of the postal sector in Spain has led to a bitter dispute between Correos, the former monopoly, and private operators. According to ASEMPRE, the association of delivery companies, the subsidies which Correos is supposed to use to make sure the whole of Spain has a postal service are in fact also used by the former monopoly to lower prices in other areas and squeeze out other operators.

Spanish MRW Posts 390.2 Mln Euro Turnover 2002

Spanish express courier MRW posted a turnover of 390.2 mln euro ($424.7 mln) in 2002, up 12.2 pct year-on-year, it was reported on February 5, 2003.

The company plans to increase the turnover in 2003 between 10 and 15 pct. MRW opened 25 offices in 2002 and closed the year with a total of 31 directly managed and 661 franchised offices in Spain.
