Correos introduces HP virtualisation solutions to consolidate its IT platform

CORREOS has invested EUR 2.9 million to introduce Hewlett Packard virtualisation solutions facilitating the consolidation of its IT platform. This virtualisation reduces the number of servers needed, significantly improves their use and simplifies management.

The project envisages reducing 50 pct of the servers, as up to seven servers can be virtualised per physical machine.

CORREOS has chosen HP as the supplier to carry out this project. HP will be in charge of purchasing, installing and configuring the new hardware and software components to improve Windows application response times and safety. To this end, it has launched an operating system migration process to Windows 2003 and the SQL Server 2005 database, replacing Windows 2000 and SQL Server 2000.

With this system update, CORREOS improves its application performance and scalability (which allows productivity to be increased by leveraging the additional hardware), application availability and the safety of the different environments.

Likewise, the reduction in servers limits administration and operations costs and helps to free up physical installations which the postal operator can then use more efficiently. The consolidation and virtualisation software is also one of the most effective solutions for saving energy. Virtualisation solutions drastically reduce CO2 emissions, up to 80-90 pct, and energy consumption.

Free “domicíliate” service to notify postal address changes

CORREOS has initiated an advertising campaign to promote the “Domicíliate” service citizens can use to notify their changes of address to its member companies, free of charge.

The postal company has decided to provide this service free of charge for users and its member companies and has sent out more than 500,000 information leaflets, 120,000 of which have been delivered door-to-door in eight districts in Madrid and in the municipalities of Parla and Valdemoro. Furthermore, in newly built housing estates all around Spain, information on the new service will be delivered door-to-door together with the new post code.

CORREOS will also promote the existing synergies between the “Domicíliate” and “Reenvío postal” services the postal company uses to forward correspondence received at the addressee’s previous address, during the period contracted by the latter.

The “Domicíliate” service already has almost large member 100 companies from all the sectors of the economy: telephony, insurance, finance, gas, electricity, water, NGOs, etc.

For companies, the new service guarantees that their customers’ addresses will always be updated, enabling them to avoid sending notices to recipients whose addressees have changed. In other words, they save time and resources in keeping their address files up to date. For the users, in addition to guaranteeing receiving their correspondence in their new address free of charge and in a single operation ‘Domicíliate’ offers the possibility of notifying the change to relatives and friends via email.

“TURCORREOS” cards went on sale today at 50 post offices around Spain. This is the first step in extending this service to the entire network of over 2,200 post offices throughout the country.

This new service is the result of the collaboration agreement signed between CORREOS and Viajes Crisol, in which the public can top up these cards, a convenient and safe way to pay for holidays and associated services, such as hotel rooms or car rental, amongst other tourist and holiday services offered by Viajes Crisol, at the post offices.

Viajes Crisol’s Sales Manger Ignacio González and CORREOS Office Division Manger Germán Domínguez presented the prepaid card at an event held at the public postal operator’s Management Centre in Madrid.

The agreement, which includes the concession of the use of the “TURCORREOS” registered trademark by the postal company to Viajes Crisol, has been launched as a long-term venture and was signed in April by CORREOS Chairman José Damián Santiago Martín and Viajes Crisol Managing Director José María Lucas.
