Spain's ChronoExprés opens parcel depot in Andalucia

Chronoexprés, the express courier owned by Spain’s public postal operator Correos, has opened a new depot in the Andalucian province of Jaén.

The 5,500 sqm centre at Guarromán, which started operations this week, will handle some 10 million parcels a year, Correos said, and has 18 van and 8 trailer loading/unloading bays.

“Its location, at kilometre 288 on the A4, is the result of a detailed study to improve the agility of operations – and offer clients an optimum quality service – to and from the south of the country,” Correos said in a statement.

It is part of a EUR 1 billion infrastructure modernisation programme which Correos started in 2001 and has also seen it open 16 state-of-the-art mail hubs across Spain.

The Guarromán depot is the sixth large logistics platform Chronoexprés relies upon in Spain; the others are in Madrid, Barcelona, Vitoria, Zamora and Zaragoza.

Correos net profits down 30 percent

Correos reported that net profits dropped by 30 percent last year to EUR 142.2 million from EUR 204.4 million in 2005. A near 6 percent rise in personnel costs – due to salary increases and a rise in the number of permanent staff – reduced operating profit, although revenues rose 2.7 percent to EUR 2.025 billion from EUR 1.972 billion the year before. Total operating expenses rose 4.8 percent to EUR 1.85 billion.
Correos said it invested over EUR 230 million in new infrastructure, equipment, products and services in 2006 (EUR 143 million buying premises and land), and was planning to spend a further EUR 247.8 million in 2007, the fourth year of its 2004-2008, EUR 1 billion modernisation drive, which has seen it open 16 out of 17 new mail hubs nationwide.
“These results confirm the positive moves in recent years towards consolidating Correos’ leadership in the Spanish postal market,” the group said in a statement.
“Correos has gained economic strength, has advanced in managerial flexibility and efficiency, and has implemented an ambitious plan to incorporate information and communication technologies that allow a more agile response to new customer and client demands, offering a more competitive service in the face of full EU postal liberalisation,” it added.
The state-owned company made the contracts of over 4,000 temporary workers permanent at the end of last year and took on a further 669 new employees. It now has around 65,000 staff.

The Virtual Post Office: Best citizen-focused project in 2006

Correos has received recognition for its track record and efforts with two new awards: the 2006 Fundetec Award for the ‘Best Citizen-focused Public Administration Project’, for the ‘Virtual Post Office’, and the ‘Best Logistics Management Award’, which is given out each year by Grupo Negocios’ Dinero magazine.

The 2006 Fundetec Award for the ‘Best Citizen-focused Public Administration Project’ was given to the ‘Virtual Post Office’, which enables citizens and companies to complete the traditional formalities at a Correos branch on the internet, without leaving their home, in a convenient and efficient way.

This project is part of the INTEGRA plan for the modernisation and complete computerisation of the company, and it is an example of Correos’ dedication to the use of ICTs.

This Correos ‘Virtual Post Office’ responds to the changes and new demands of the citizens, offering the technological resources necessary to complete a wide variety of formalities on the postal website. Citizens can use their computers to access a particular post office, at www.correos.es, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, where they can send letters, personalised postcards, telegrams, certified deliveries, notices, postal orders and burofax. The website also provides all types of postal information (postal code and branch locator, delivery tracker, cost calculator, etc.).

At the end of last year, the Virtual Post Office added the e-postal order to its catalogue of services, which has had an excellent reception among customers and users. In 2007, the offer was increased with the personalised stamp, ‘Tu Sello’, which has also been well received: after just two months in service, over 1,800 orders have been processed.
