DHL consolidates its presence in the Basque Country with the purchase of Transportes Eganaberri

DHL Iberia, the world leading transport and logistics company , has recently acquired the Egañaberri transport company.

This operation was completed at the end of October and means the Bergara depot’s integration into the DHL group, as the Egañaberri transport company operated in that town under the DHL Express trademark as DHL’s representative in West Gipuzkoa, serving the whole of the Deba Valley.
In this way, the two DHL Express centres covering the province of Guipuzcoa (San Sebastian and Bergara) now belong to the DHL Group.

With this operation, DHL has consolidated and strengthened its presence in the Basque Country, where it recently opened new premises at Bilbao airport and the air hub for Spain, Portugal, South-West France and Noth Africa, in Vitoria.

All comers to gain access to post office network

Following a European Union directive to liberalize mail markets by 2009, the Cabinet is expected today to approve a measure to allow outside operations to gain access to Spain’s post office infrastructure.

Under the proposal, state and private postal operations will be able to use the Correos’ network, including its employees and vehicles, to offer their own services. Delivery firms such as Germany’s Deutsche Post and Holland’s TNT, as well as private companies, already operate in Spain but do not have access to Correos’ infrastructure.

The Spanish postal service, which is this year marking its 250 anniversary, has more than 4,000 offices throughout the country with 65,000 employees. According to the EU, postal services handle about 135 billion items a year amounting to Euro88 billion in revenue or one percent of community GDP.

Nearly 4,000 people join Correos in permanent positions

From the beginning of November, Correos will have nearly 4,000 additional permanent employees in its workforce. At that time, 3,177 people will take up full time, permanent positions as a result of the vacancies advertised earlier this year and the entrance examinations that took place on 23 July. A further 800 people will take up stable employment with the company to help provide the Universal Postal Service in rural areas. And in the next few months, a further 5,000 people will be employed on permanent contracts for specific times of the year; these workers will help cover holiday periods and peak times, such as the summer and Christmas campaigns.

This system will encourage the dynamic and decentralised incorporation of workers to permanent positions, and will enable vacant positions to be covered more effectively, resulting in an increase in the quality of employment and an increase in the quality of the postal service provided to our customers.

Spanish express market forecast to grow 8.2% this year

Spain’s courier and parcels market is expanding rapidly, forecast to increase by 8.2% this year to euro6.6 billion following a 7% rise in revenues in 2005 and over 9% the year before.

The expansion is due to strong industrial output, the internationalisation of trade and an electronic commerce boom, say Spanish researchers DBK.

Business parcels overall grew 8.6% last year and industrial packages by 5.1%. International parcel deliveries were up, for the industrial sector by over 10% and the business sector by 8%.

Seur, MRW, DHL, Iberia TNT and MEX are the main players with a combined market share of almost half. Over 5,300 companies registered to collect and deliver mail, 7% up on 2004, according to the study.

“The most dynamic growth corresponded to business parcels, stimulated by good performance by the private sector,” the report says.

“Geographical coverage by the main players is growing all the time, the expansion often based on the development of franchise networks and alliances between operators.”
