Spanish express operator MRW grows 9% in 2005

Spanish express operator MRW has announced growth of nine per cent to revenues of just under EUR517 million for 2005. The Barcelona-based company said it expanded its franchise network with 31 new outlets, ending the year with 737 franchises in Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar. MRW also opened six new logistics terminals, taking the number of such facilities to 37. In terms of products, MRW introduced a 48-hour service in Portugal.

DHL begins construction of its new terminal at the Vitoria Airport

DHL began construction at the end of January on its new terminal at the Vitoria airport. This came after a final contract for sale was signed with the company Clasa, in accordance with the terms agreed upon in May 2005. On a 12,000 sq. meter piece of ground the new facility will include a 3,600 sq. metre plant designed for sorting and distribution of parcels, and 1,400 square metres of office space. In addition to air freight management, the plant will have 12 land transport loading docks and capacity to handle 5,000 shipments per hour.
DHL has announced an investment of 7 million euros for the project.

Palletways links hubs with IT and Trunking

Palletways passed a landmark last week as it linked its UK hub in Lichfield with its hub in Nijmegen, which serves Benelux, Germany and Denmark.
The near-identical computer systems of the two networks were plugged into each other and a scheduled trunking service started operating for the first time. One- and two- pallet consignments are the core traffic.

Stamp price gap grows as European postal sector prepares for market opening

The Free and Fair Post Initiative (FFPI) today released its fifth survey
on stamp prices in the European Union (EU). The study, which covers the 25 EU member States, reveals that 20% of EU countries have increased stamp prices in the course of 2005 and that price differences are still wide. The annual comparative analysis of the FFPI points out that prices of stamps for basic domestic letters have increased in 5 member States1 during this year. In addition, the survey reports that the gap in prices between the old and new EU member States is still widening. It is in fact important to notice that costs have risen in 3 countries from the EU-15, therefore further enlarging the difference with the price in the new member States.
