Azkar 9 mths net drops to 10.98 mln eur vs 13.17 mln on lower one-time gains

Transportes Azkar SA said net profit fell to 10.98 mln eur in the nine months to Sept 30 from 13.17 mln a year earlier, mainly due to lower one-time gains.
In a statement, Azkar said sales rose 14.21 pct to 231.12 mln eur. EBITDA climbed 13.16 pct to 31.39 mln eur, while EBIT rose 14.48 pct to 15.02 mln.
Investments totalled 24.83 mln eur in the nine month period, while net debt stood at 58.05 mln, with gearing at 38.63 pct.

Spanish private equity firm Nazca Capital exits Spain’s largest private postal operator

Nazca has reached an agreement with Deutsche Post for the sale of its holding of 33% that it had in Unipost, the largest private operator in the Spanish postal sector. The acquisition of the private equity firm’s holding will be effective from the end of October 2004 once Spain’s equivalent of the Monopolies Commission has authorised it. Nazca’s investment was made 18 months ago in June 2003. The transaction was for an undisclosed amount, but Nazca stated it had obtained a return significantly higher than the market average, exceeding its own expectations.

An Post set to sell off firms for 30m

Loss-making An Post has decided to sell off two of its subsidiary companies which retail mobile phone top-ups, in a move which could raise up to 30m for the State-owned group. In recent days, Goodbody Stockbrokers has circulated potential buyers with an information memorandum on the sale of the two operations, the Irish Independent has learned. The two companies – PostTS UK, which is based in Crewe, Britain, and An Post Transaction Services SA, based in Madrid – are understood to be profitable and they employ a total of 100. The British company has made a gross turnover of GBP11m, according to its most recently-filed set of accounts. The UK operation has a network of terminals in 9,500 stores across Britain which allow consumers electronically top up the credit on their mobile phones. The Spanish operation, which has been longer established, has built up a network of over 11,200 terminals.

Spanish Post Office to benefit from reform

In Spain, the public works ministry has begun talks with private postal operators, state-owned postal operator Correos, trade unions and consumer groups to approve an amendment to the Postal Services Act of 1998. In practice, it would appear that the amendment would benefit Correos: in return for an extension of universal postal service obligations, according to which Correos would have to provide postal services to all parts of Spain, the government would pay the postal service provider subsidies and ensure Correos’ monopoly in certain areas. The implementation of the latter measure in particular would effectively reduce the size of Spain’s deregulated postal market. These measures are at odds with measures being proposed in neighboring countries.

Altadis’ Logista completes Geopost acquisition

Altadis SA affiliate Cia de Distribucion Integral Logista SA said it has completed the acquisition of La Poste Group’s Geopost Logistics Holding (GLH) for 12.8 mln eur. GLH posted revenue of 69.4 mln eur in 2003, Logista said, adding that its activities will allow the Spanish group to gain a foothold in the French market for promotions at service stations, travel agents and bank branches.
