Transportes Azkar reports increase in sales

Spanish transport and logistics company Transportes Azkar has announced a marked increase in interim sales. The half year figure rose by 14.6% over the comparable period in 2003 reaching EUR 153 million. In contrast, the companys net profit sank by 10% despite a EUR 22 million rise in gross profit. Azkar is investing in its Spanish network by establishing new distribution centres in north eastern Catalonia. Over the past year it invested a total of EUR 17 million in this region.

Postal monopoly for Spanish government departments may end

The Spanish government has been warned by its legal department that the monopoly enjoyed by state-owned postal operator Correos, for contracts to provide postal and telegraphy services to governmental departments, may be illegal. Correos has been allocated a number of these contracts without having to bid against other companies, despite the fact that its legal monopoly only applies to national and international letters and cards weighing 350 grammes or less. The entire postal sector in Spain, along with the rest of the EU, is due to be liberalised in 2009 in any case, although recent steps taken by the government seem to suggest that it wants to preserve Correos’ monopoly.

A new EEC Directive on working hours will cause serious security issues for the parcel industry

Trying to keep up with the myriad EEC Directives, which are constantly spawned from the Brussels hotbed of activity, is causing a nightmare for every UK industry sector. Logistics companies will not be spared the sea of paperwork as a new EEC Directive on working hours is proposed.
John Pritchard, Head of Security at Tipton based Nightspeed Secure Worldwide Express is concerned about the issues of security that the proposed new legislation will jeopardise.
He said: “If the 48 hour a week rule is inflicted on to parcel carriers it will mean taking on more staff. The parcel industry as a whole has a high turnover of drivers and warehouse staff and there is already a shortage of personnel.”

Alliance closes European circle for pallet clients

Pallet network Pall-Ex has formed a strategic alliance with Hellmann Worldwide Logistics to give its members and customers pan-European coverage.
Pall-Ex has existing partners in Germany, Scandinavia and Spain and has been trunking into Europe on an ad hoc basis. From 2 August, it will offer a scheduled five-nights-a-week service available for quarter, half and full pallets.
