Syslore to deliver an address recognition and matching solution for Itella

Itella Mail Communication and Syslore Ltd. have signed a contract for the delivery of an address recognition and matching system for mail sorting and electronic message delivery services.

By adopting the Syslore mCorrection Receiver Matching EngineTM (RME) fuzzy matching system, Itella will improve the address and receiver recognition quality in their hybrid and electronic message delivery service and increase the level of automation in their mail sorting process. mCorrection RME system incorporates new-generation computing algorithms that can recognise faulty, inaccurate and incorrect address and receiver data more effectively and more precisely than was possible before. The system will be deployed to all Itella address recognition processes by 2010 in Finland and abroad.

The system operates as a centralised solution, which receives real-time address queries over a network connection from several automatic mail sorting machines in different sorting centres. If, for example, the mail receiver name can be recognised, but the address data is incorrect or only partly recognised, the system can find the correct address data from the address database up to the mail delivery point. Apart from increasing the level of automation in mail sorting, the solution can decrease the number of mail delivered to incorrect addresses and monitor the quality of address recognitions and sorting process.

A centralised software solution can also remarkably improve the quality and throughput time of address and receiver recognition for Itella’s electronic and hybrid services. mCorrection RME incorporates open interfaces and language-independent algorithms that enable more efficient use of existing systems and postal data assets, and improve the quality of service.

On course toward a historic merger

Posten’s sales in the first quarter advanced slightly as a result of acquisitions completed mainly in the logistics business. Sales as well as profits were negatively affected by the shorter first quarter, with two fewer work days than in the first quarter the preceding year. Yet consolidated operating earnings of SEK 694m reflected one of the strongest quarters ever.

With sales of SEK 4.3 billion, the messaging business is essential for Posten. Posten Messaging’s sales declined as a result of fewer work days in the quarter. At the same time, operations are encountering challenges in the form of intensifying competition, more substitution, and a higher general level of costs, and operating earnings declined. Thanks to focused efforts to continually streamline operations, the business reported an operating margin close to 11 pct.

Posten Logistics continues to grow profitably. Acquisitions completed in Norway and Finland accounted for about half of the sales growth. The operations are focused on creating a Nordic structure for heightened customer benefits, increased efficiency, and specialization on the Nordic market with the goal of bolstering Posten Logistics’ position and future competitive strength.

Of the core businesses, Stralfors delivered the strongest relative improvement in earnings. Stralfors continues to grow briskly in information logistics. Several key orders were secured from major corporations with a broad customer base in the Nordic countries. Keeping focused on productivity improvements and streamlining operations will further boost profitability in the business. Stralfors’ European platform will give rise to new, interesting business opportunities in the group formed by the merger with Post Danmark
as the European postal market is deregulated.

Cardo Supplies Complete Door and Docking Solutions for DHL’S New Terminal in Gothenburg

Within its division Door & Logistics Solutions, with its corporate brand Crawford, Cardo has been commissioned to supply door and docking systems for DHL Express’s new terminal in Gothenburg which is being established in cooperation with Skanska. The order comprises 139 doors and 111 docking systems as well as a 5-year maintenance and warranty agreement.

The new terminal consists of a transshipment facility and offices covering approximately 20,000 square meters. The project was started during the fourth quarter of 2007 and is planned to be ready for use in the first quarter of 2009.

DHL Express has also chosen to invest in Crawford Dock Management – a software-based system for the monitoring and follow-up of inventory and truck traffic at complex logistics centers. Among other things, the system provides DHL Express with information on how the terminal utilizes its doors and docking units, generating a basis for decisions on optimizing internal logistics. Crawford Dock Management also sends an alarm signal via SMS or e-mail if there are any faults or when it is time for preventive maintenance, all to ensure optimal availability.

DHL Express is investing in technical solutions that, among other things, promote good ergonomics. For example, the company has chosen dock levelers with telescopic aluminum lips that provide a smooth transition. These prevent work-related injuries to knees and backs and reduce wear on forklifts. DHL Express has also chosen electrical operation of all doors, giving a more comfortable work environment and minimizing energy losses.

Satisfaction at Post Denmark with Danish-swedish merger

With the publication of the plans for a merger between Post Danmark A/S and Posten AB, a long-felt desire for an international business partner is now one decisive step closer to being fulfilled.
– The European postal market is undergoing a violent process of change in these years of radical EU liberalisation. As a result, the future of small and medium-sized national postal companies will at best be highly uncertain. For Post Danmark, the development means that we will need larger volumes and a much wider range of services for our customers than we are capable of developing based on the Danish home market alone. It is therefore vital for Post Danmark to find an international business partner, and the merger with the Swedes was quite naturally at the top of our wish list, Fritz Schur, Chairman of Post Danmark, says.
In future, Fritz Schur will take up the post of chairman of the merged company.
Post Danmark points out that the main advantages to the Danish company and its cus-tomers are in the field of information logistics, in which Posten AB has a very wide range of services provided by the subsidiary Strålfors, which is already active in several European countries. In addition, being part of the new company Post Danmark will greatly enhance its position within the company’s most significant growth areas – cargo and parcels.
– In the coming years we will see a trend towards further intensification of the current consolidation wave in postal and logistics areas, and with a merger between Post Danmark and Posten Sverige we are well equipped to meet that challenge, Fritz Schur says.
Post Danmark’s CEO Helge Israelsen looks forward to the new opportunities that the merger will generate:
It is my expectation that the merger will benefit our customers. At the same time, I am/we are very satisfied that this will provide us with a stronger foundation for retaining our position as the preferred postal company of all citizens and companies in this country. Post Danmark will still have a large number of tasks to perform for the Danish society, tasks that we take pride in performing. The day’s announcement does not change the rules and requirements we have to meet, and it will still be entirely up to us in Denmark to decide how to organise our postal service in the future. The Danish society differs from the Swedish society in having different challenges and requirements relating to postal services and we will retain our focus on meeting these challenges. A fact that a coming merger will not change. The merger, on the other hand, will give us the strength to continue to develop the company and our services to the Danish society, CEO Helge Israelsen says.

Sixteen Postal Operators Sign REIMS III Terminal Dues Agreement

After two years of negotiations European postal operators have reached a new agreement on terminal dues payments replacing the REIMS II Agreement in force since 1997.

The REIMS III Agreement took effect on 1 January 2008 with sixteen European postal operators committing to it. REIMS stands for Remuneration for the Exchange of International Mails. The sixteen posts that are now part of REIMS III are from the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Additional posts are expected to sign the agreement, which will remain open for signature for all present and former parties of the REIMS II Agreement and the REIMS East Agreement that participated in its negotiation.

REIMS III continues with quality of service standards much more ambitious than the targets under the EU Postal Directive. The individualized penalties in REIMS III for not reaching the J+1 standard and a target of 93 percent will continue to produce quality of service benefits. Transitional rules have been outlined that will continue to raise targets for those parties that have not yet reached 93% J+1.

A second benefit in the REIMS III agreement is that ensures that terminal dues as stipulated in the EU Postal Directive are cost-based, and are based on regulated domestic tariffs in the delivering country.

The parties to REIMS III have the firm commitment to continue to offer Third Party Access in line with the EU Commission’s 2003 Exemption Decision.

With the REIMS East transitional arrangement and the REIMS and REIMS East IDM Agreements incorporated into the REIMS III Agreement, it is expected that more REIMS East parties will sign the REIMS III Agreement during 2008.
