Merger between Posten and Post Danmark

The Swedish Ministry of Enterprise, Energy & Communications, The Danish Ministry of Transport and CVC Capital Partners (“CVC”) have signed a letter of intent regarding a merger between Posten AB (“Posten”) and Post Danmark A/S (“Post Danmark”). The companies’ rationale is to meet the markets increasing challenges through an increased competitiveness of a merged company. This merger will also secure the possibility to maintain a first class mail and parcel business in both countries continuing to reach all enterprise customers and households.
The agreement entails a merger between both companies into a combined company which will be jointly owned by the Swedish state, the Danish state, CVC and the employees. The merged company will have annual revenue of approximately SEK 45 billion and include over 50,000 employees.

Fritz H. Schur., currently Chairman of Post Danmark, will be appointed Chairman. Erik Olsson, currently the CEO of Posten, will assume the position as CEO of the merged company. The parent company will be Swedish and the headquarters will be located in Stockholm. The Swedish state together with the employees of Posten will own 60 percent of the merged company and the Danish state together with the employees of Post Danmark and CVC will own 40 percent. As part of the agreement, Posten will distribute an extraordinary dividend of SEK 1,400 million to the Swedish state. In all other respects, the influence of the owners is balanced in such a way that the Swedish state will have equal voting rights as the Danish state and CVC together.

The merged company will be organised along specialised business divisions, in a similar way as Posten has been organised since January 1, 2007. The traditional postal business in each respective country will be operated as national entities adhering to national regulations and using the same brands as today (“Posten” and “Post Danmark”). The logistics businesses will be joined under one division and under an own brand. The information logistics and graphical business will be joined under the Strålfors brand in the merged company. Beyond the four main businesses, the company will comprise group functions and one unit for shared services. Post Danmark’s 25% ownership in De Post – La Poste (Belgium) will also be part of the merged company.

DHL becomes the main supplier to Sweden's booksellers

DHL Express (Sweden) and the service company for the Swedish Booksellers’ Association, Bopako Service AB, have entered into a long-term cooperation agreement covering 360 bookstores in Sweden. The agreement means that the booksellers can check where their shipments are in the transport chain and that delivery times are significantly reduced.

Swedish people are buying more books than ever before. According to the Swedish Retail Institute, HUI, 80 million books were sold in Sweden in 2007, an increase of 4.1 percent over the previous year.

The Swedish Booksellers’ Association, SBF, was established on August 14, 1993, and now has around 360 booksellers as corporate members. Now DHL Express (Sweden) and the SBF’s service company have signed an exclusive framework agreement for the SBF’s member companies.

Initially, the framework agreement is expected to cover 375,000 shipments and a total of 550,000 parcels per year, making it one of the most important parcels service agreements for DHL in Sweden. And there is every indication that the volumes may be much greater than 550,000 parcels per year. This is because the total sales of books are increasing all the time and this agreement will produce spin-off effects for other types of goods.

DHL Express hopes that the agreement will have a ripple effect on smaller companies, printers and others. Altogether, more than 300 companies are directly or indirectly linked to Sweden’s booksellers.

DHL Express Sweden invests in all-green distribution fleet

DHL Express Sweden has announced it will invest about EUR 800,000 for 250 vehicles running on alternative fuels within the next three years.

DHL Express plans to swap out diesel-powered vehicles from its own fleet as their leases expire, as well as to cover the additional cost of another 50 vehicles when any of the forwarders contracted to DHL switches to an environmentally friendly alternative. This follows the recent decision by DHL Express to convert all its diesel-powered vans to run on alternative fuels such as biogas, natural gas and ethanol.

The company said that the use of delivery vehicles that run on alternative fuels means a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 5-8 tons per vehicle per year. As the investment covers 250 vehicles, this is equivalent to a total carbon dioxide reduction of around 2,000 tons per year.

DHL Express Sweden currently has around 20 biogas-powered vehicles available, including 5 heavy trucks and 15 delivery vans used mainly to transport express shipments within metropolitan areas. The number of environmentally friendly vehicles is about to increase substantially.

“Every year we use the Swedish TKM model (the freight forwarders quality and environmental manual) to evaluate the 300 carriers contracted to DHL in this country. Given that we place these requirements on other carriers, it is only natural for us to practice what we preach. That is why the transition to delivery vehicles that run on alternative fuels seems like an obvious investment,” said Peter Hesslin, Operations Manager for DHL Express, responsible for handling goods up to 2.5 tons at around 30 terminals in Sweden.

Another major environmental effect of this investment concerns emissions of particulates and nitric oxide associated with jams in city centres. This is because particulate emissions from vehicles that run on alternative fuels are much reduced. But the investment covers not only DHL’s own vehicles but also diesel-powered distribution vehicles operated by the 300 forwarders contracted to DHL in Sweden. In this area, DHL is covering the additional cost of the transition to environmentally-adapted vehicles.
