Publication of Postal Directive marks start date for real market opening

The publication marks the entry into force of the directive and sets the clock ticking for abolishing legal monopolies on postal services by 31 December 2010. The Directive is the result of a broad political consensus on the way forward for the regulatory framework of European postal services. The Commission will monitor and assist Member States pro-actively in implementing the Directive. In particular, it will pay close attention to potential entry barriers that would deprive users of the benefit of a dynamic and open market.

The mission of EU postal reform continues. Next steps will require close monitoring of the development of competition notably by national regulatory authorities whose role has now been strengthened further. Particular attention will be paid to quality and prices of universal postal service. The Commission services will assist Member States in the transposition of the Directive to ensure that postal reform remains true to its objective of high quality and innovative postal services.

The text published reflects the overall political agreement between the institutions and keeps the key elements of the Commission’s initial proposal and in particular: the accomplishment of the internal market of Community postal services via the abolition of the reserved area in all Member States; the confirmation of the scope and standard of universal service; reinforcement of consumers’ rights and upgrading of the role of national regulatory authorities; the offering of a list of measures Member States may take to safeguard and finance, if necessary, the universal service.

With the removal of reserved areas, users of postal services can expect the services available to them to develop and further improve. In this open environment, universal service providers will be motivated to become more reliable and efficient and to further increase their customer focus in the light of potential competition from new market entrants. In line with the goals of the Lisbon agenda, full market opening will also directly foster the creation of new jobs in new postal companies, and, indirectly, in the industries dependent on the postal sector.

DHL invests more than 10,7 million Euros in new terminal north of Stockholm

DHL Express has decided to build a completely new terminal in the Rosersberg industrial park in Stockholm. This is part of DHL’s strategic offensive to build new terminals all over the country.

With its strategic position, the Rosersberg terminal provides increased closeness to the customer, shorter lead times for shipments north of Stockholm and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

The investment is estimated at 10,7 million Euros, and follows close upon the publication of DHL’s plans for a whole new terminal in Gothenburg. And it should be remembered that DHL’s new terminals in Örebro and Luleå were only completed a short time ago.

Until now, all northbound freight to and from Stockholm has been handled via DHL’s terminal in Västberga in the south of Stockholm. This has meant unnecessarily long journeys and hence unnecessary carbon dioxide emissions. The Rosersberg terminal has a number of positive effects.

Commissioning of the new terminal is planned for May of next year. To this end, DHL has entered into a cooperative agreement with the well-known real estate company Kilenkrysset. The project involves Kilenkrysset building a terminal covering just over 9,500 square meters. But as the whole site runs to 45,000 square meters, there is ample scope to extend the terminal in the future in line with increasing demand.

The new terminal in Rosersberg will support around 20 vans for parcel distribution, 40 trucks for collection and delivery of goods, and 30 or so for regular scheduled traffic.

Strengthened Posten grows with improved profitability

Posten has continued to deliver strong financial results throughout 2007. Operating
earnings improved by 38 pct to total almost SEK 2 billion. These are the best earnings
from the core business in Posten’s 371-year history. At the same time, sales increased by
7 pct, totaling approximately SEK 30 billion. This shows that we have succeeded, already
during the first year of our new operational structure, in carrying out our focused
efforts to reduce costs and increase income by clearer specialization and increased
customer focus.
1 USD = 6.30871 SEK
The strong 10 pct growth of Posten Logistics is solid proof that we have been successful
in standing up to increasingly tough competition to strengthen our position on the
market. With additional acquisitions in Finland and the establishment of the distribution
network MyPack in Norway, Posten Logistics has created the conditions for a more
unified logistics concept on the Finnish market and broadened its offer for distance
trading, and has increased its total capacity on the growing Nordic logistics market.

By successfully integrating Posten’s printing operations and winning important
deals, Stralfors has grown by a full 31 pct within information logistics. At the same
time, Stralfors has both streamlined the business with divestments of non-core businesses, and has created new growth opportunities, especially for Graphic Solutions
aimed toward the pharmaceutical industry.

DHL signs national agreement with grocery chain ICA

DHL and the ICA Group have signed a framework agreement covering all retailers in the country. The agreement means that individual retailers can now offer their customers the facility to post and collect DHL parcels of various sizes.

DHL continues herewith to invest in the private market. DHL Express can already offer private individuals and companies over 1,150 posting and collection points across the country, the so-called SERVICEPOINTS. By the end of the year, DHL expects to have almost 1,500 outlets.

“ICA is Sweden’s largest grocery chain, and now that we are increasing our cooperation, we expect to achieve a denser geographical coverage for our SERVICEPOINT concept”, says Lars Jordahn, CEO of DHL Express (Sweden).

DHL Express launched the SERVICEPOINT concept at the end of last year, providing private individuals and companies with a simple way to send domestic parcels at times that suit them.

There are posting and collection points in shops of various kinds, from gas stations, kiosks and video stores to grocery stores, Pressbyran and 7-Eleven outlets. A common feature of all SERVICEPOINTS is that they are located in places where a lot of people pass by and that they have generous opening hours.

As well as posting and collection in the stores, DHL Express also allows transport to be booked and goods to be tracked over the Internet, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The entire flow of information is handled electronically.

The packaging is included in the total price and is available in the following sizes: 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kg. All boxes can be reused and recycled.
