Itella and Alma Media partner up in eCommerce

Itella and Alma Media have concluded a co-operation agreement pertaining to Alma Media’s new Mikko.fi eCommerce concept. Itella will offer mailing and transport services to Alma Media’s web service customers as of 15 September, and Mikko.fi will also serve as a marketing channel for Itella’s services.

At the Mikko.fi portal, owned and maintained by Alma Media, service users can sell, buy, rent or auction goods and services over the Internet. Both consumers and corporations can act as sellers.

The web service places Itella’s parcel services comprehensively at the sellers’ disposal, including parcel address label printing, pricing and transport services. As a seller places a product for sale with the service, (s)he can select the required delivery method for it, price the item and print an address label using a personal computer. Simultaneously, the information is transferred into Itella’s transport system.

The identifier on the address label allows both the recipient and the seller of the parcel to track its route on the Internet, and advance notification of the arriving parcel will be sent as a text message or eLetter. The parcel will be delivered either directly to the recipient’s home address or the nearest post office. Later, the aim is to link further Itella services to the Mikko.fi service, in support of buying and selling on the Internet. Itella Group uses the name Posti on the Mikko.fi portal, providing consumer services under that name.

Posten Logistik acquires logistics company in Finland

Wholly-owned Posten subsidiary Posten Logistik acquires Suomen Logistiikkatalo in Finland. This strengthens Posten’s position within the Nordic region even further, and creates new opportunities for flows between the Nordic and Baltic regions and Russia.

The newly-acquired Finnish logistics company works in third-party logistics, and its customers deal in fast-moving consumer goods and spare parts. The new acquisition will make Posten Logistik one of the leading players within transport services and warehousing in Finland.

“Through the acquisition of Suomen Logistiikkatalo, we can offer a powerful alternative within third-party logistics and warehousing in the Finnish market,” says Henrik Höjsgaard, CEO of Posten Logistik. “It also means that we will strengthen our Nordic presence even further.”

More and more parcels and pallets are being sent internationally, and more and more companies require flexible, cross-border, cost-effective turnkey solutions. Through a strong presence in Finland, Posten Logistik is able to offer an expanded service and provide Nordic businesses with an excellent alternative in the Finnish market.

The acquisition of Suomen Logistiikkatalo in Finland strengthens Posten Logistik’s position within the Nordic region, and creates new opportunities for flows between the Nordic and Baltic regions and Russia. Posten’s Finnish operations are currently run through the subsidiaries DPD, HIT Finland and Sal-Trans.

Through its subsidiaries and the franchise network DPD, Posten Logistik already offers parcel, pallet and express services throughout the Nordic region. Strong mid-year results for Posten

increased by 15 pct, totaling just over SEK 15 billion. At the same time, our operating earnings improved by a full 30 percent. This is evidence of our strength, and shows that we have succeeded in the transition to our new operational structure without losing momentum. Posten has been able to combine an increased level of specialization with its reliable delivery quality and unique ability to reach all of Sweden’s households and companies each workday. Not only has this enabled us to increase sales for our existing customers, but we have also competed and won valuable contracts with new customers.

The projects and ongoing rationalization activities that Posten is conducting allows us to present a broader and more competitive portfolio of communication and logistics services. Proof of our ability to streamline operations lies in the fact that every quarter has shown a measurable increase in productivity since the beginning of 2003.

Competition is increasing for all our operations. The Swedish postal market has been completely deregulated since 1993. Now it will be very interesting to follow the upcoming decision-making process for a fully deregulated EU postal market. This will bring interesting development opportunities for Posten, thanks in part to Stralfors’ platform in Europe. The Swedish Parliament’s decision on June 14th has been an important milestone. The decision means that Posten’s obligation to provide essential financial transaction services through the Cashier Service will cease as of January 1, 2009. This welcome decision eliminates the uncertainty that has surrounded the future of the Cashier Service within Posten.

Swedish Posten expanding in Norway

Through its subsidiary, Posten Logistik, Swedish Posten is expanding its operations in Norway. Approx. 700 distribution points where Norwegian consumers can collect packages which they have ordered are being established under the MyPack brand.

Through its new distribution network, Posten Logistik will provide companies with a powerful new alternative on the Norwegian market.

Posten’s target group is primarily larger distance sellers who require a strong partner for the entire Nordic market. The Norwegian consumers order goods from companies such as Ellos and Klingel. These goods are sent by Posten to Norway where the packages delivered to a distribution point near the customer.

In Sweden, Ellos sends approx. 3.5 million packages each year to its customers and is thus the country’s largest distance selling company. Ellos’ customer circle in Norway is large and constantly growing.

Posten has an agreement with ICA Norge which means that approx. 400 distribution points are being established in ICA’s and Rimi’s shops. Some 300 additional distribution points are also being established. Swedish Posten will thereby cover 92 pct of Norway. The total of some 700 distribution points being established by Posten will be visible under the MyPack brand.
