DHL Express Austria goes green

DHL has extended its GOGREEN range of carbon-neutral services to Austria to meet customers’ demand for a more environmentally-responsible shipping option and to compensate for the emissions generated when transporting shipments across the globe.

By the end of the financial year, customers receive a certificate about the total volume of the CO2 emissions offset during one year. The whole process is verified by the independent certification company SGS, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

DHL Express Austria has for years undertaken many measures towards environmental and climate protection. For example, it has launched an effective environment management system used for certifying among others all the 15 locations in Austria according to the environment management norm ISO 14001. In addition, the company has been continuously improving its fleet in terms of the CO2 efficiency by optimizing the planning of the routes and the network design. Furthermore, the fleet is being modernized converting 10 pct of the fleet to natural gas vehicles by 2010.

The UPU calls on the market for ideas on ".post"

UPU works to establish .post, an Internet top-level sponsored domain. The Universal Postal Union, on behalf of Posts worldwide and associated industry bodies, is looking to enhance access to universal postal service in the electronic world by establishing a top-level domain on the Internet – .post.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has assigned .post to the UPU. This means that Posts worldwide could one day use the .post domain to offer new electronic services, or provide citizens with an electronic address that matches their physical address, for example. A top-level domain would also enable many developing Posts to enter the electronic world more easily, as well as helping Posts develop a brand that would be recognized the world over.

For the UPU, .post is the ideal way to create a universal electronic postal service that fulfils the expectations of citizens and governments worldwide in terms of security and stability. .post would allow the UPU to create a global electronic postal network establishing more than 660,000 post offices via the Internet, alongside the single territory for the exchange of international physical mail.

Swiss Post International posts good but slightly lower half-year results

Swiss Post achieved a good result in H1 2008. With net income of EUR 265 million the result was EUR 51 m or 16.1 pct below the record figure of the year-back period. Swiss Post International – Swiss Post’s international unit – generated operating income of EUR 327 m, which was EUR 28 m below the year-back period. The reason for this was due mainly to the current currency situation. SPI is nevertheless likely to contribute to the Group profit of Swiss Post in 2008.

Swiss Post International (SPI), which operates in the international mail, parcel and express business, posted a good operating result again in the first half of 2008. The performance was not quite as good as that in 2007, however. SPI generated operating income of EUR 327 m in the first half. This is EUR 28 m below the year-back figure. SPI lost around EUR 6 m as a result of transactions in foreign currencies, which were converted at a lower rate than in mid-2007. The result from translation of amounts due from international partners was also around EUR 21 m lower.

Most SPI subsidiaries were able to lift their operating income again compared with last year. SPI intends to continue along its growth path in the next few years with a number of ongoing projects in sales and with additional acquisitions. SPI is thus driving the steady expansion of its international network. Already at the beginning of 2008 SPI acquired the Swedish letter processor IMS Europe AB.
