Swiss Post International continues success in cross-border business

Swiss Post achieved excellent results again in 2007. With group profit of 909 million Swiss francs (EUR 551 million), it beat the previous year’s figure by 72 million (EUR 44 million). Operating income rose by over 800 million francs (EUR 485 million) to 8,712 million (EUR 5,280 million). The international division, Swiss Post International, increased its operating income by 6 per cent to 1,145 million francs (EUR 694 million) and contributed 34 million francs (EUR 20.6 million) to the overall group profit.

Operating exclusively in the mail, parcel and express business, Swiss Post International (SPI) increased its revenue again in 2007. Having exceeded the billion mark in revenue the previous year, it achieved a further rise of 6 per cent in the last year to 1,145 million francs (EUR 694 million).

In the last year, SPI has been driving forward the expansion of its international network, which included the opening of a sales agency in Denmark at the end of March 2007. In October 2007, SPI became privileged sales partner of the German Hermes Logistics Group (HLG) for international B2C traffic in the European markets. Previously, SPI sold 30 per cent of its shareholding in Italian parcel and logistics company, Swiss Post Porta a Porta, to HLG. At the beginning of 2008, SPI also acquired the Swedish letter processor, IMS Europe AB, strengthening its position as a provider in the Swedish postal market. To strengthen its customs expertise, SPI took over FM Verzollungs AG in Basel on 1.1 2007.

Swiss Post opens its PostLab at EPFL

Swiss Post has strengthened its partnership with the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
By opening its incubator (PostLab) on the EPFL campus, it is clearly signalling its intention to be one of Switzerland’s innovation pioneers. Alongside high-tech companies, it will work in close collaboration with the school, its researchers and its students.

Using the incubator concept, PostLab will offer financing to develop projects that have strong potential and to help put them to a specific use. This concept helps reduce the time between the generation of an idea and its realization. This means greater efficiency, faster development of services and increased motivation for all partners who can witness the result of their contribution.

Led by Lorenz Lehmann of Swiss Post, PostLab is not only aimed at EPFL researchers, but also at students with good ideas as well as collaborators from other academic institutions.

Many research topics developed at EPFL represent solid prospects for Swiss Post’s business development. The security of electronic financial transactions is one area that is constantly evolving. Security of this kind will permit the development of new services in areas such as cellular telephony. The goal is to give users freedom and convenience, not to impede their activity. Another topic area is transportation logistics, which have to incorporate many parameters these days to achieve speed, traceability, cost savings and environmental responsibility, while enabling the short-term planning of transportation resources. This challenge calls for research in the fields of management, logistics, mathematics, electronics and many other leading disciplines. Advances in artificial intelligence also constitute a particularly fertile source of innovation.

24th Universal Postal Congress – 23 July to 12 August 2008

The 24th Universal Postal Congress will be held from 23 July to 12 August 2008 in Geneva (Switzerland).

More than 1,500 delegates from the UPU’s 191 member countries will gather to discuss the major issues affecting the global postal sector today.

The Universal Postal Congress is the supreme authority of the Union and brings together plenipotentiaries of all member countries. One of the major accomplishments of Congresses held since the first Berne Congress in 1874 has been to assist member countries to develop a worldwide postal network that is accessible and affordable to all citizens and to introduce products and services that meet customer needs.

Although Congress’ main function is legislative, the recent tendency has been to focus more on strategic and broad policy issues and the 2008 Congress will adopt a World Postal Strategy that will serve as a roadmap for member countries and UPU bodies until the next Congress in 2012.

Congress also elects the Director General and the Deputy Director General, as well as the members of the Council of Administration and of the Postal Operations Council.
