Swiss post office: evening parcel deliveries tested

The Swiss post office has launched household deliveries of parcels in the evening on a trial basis in Geneva. The postal service has been delivering packages between 5 and 8 p.m. “The post office is adapting to the change in (people’s) habits,” spokeswoman Nathalie Salamin told Television Suisse Romande.

More and more people are away at work or engaged in other activities when deliveries are made to homes in the morning. This result in parcels having to be transported back to depots and customers are forced to pick them up at a later date. This coming-and-going ends up causing the post office more work. By delivering in the evening, the expectation is that more people will be at home to receive parcels.

There may be environmental benefits too, with vehicles driving less. The Geneva trial project will run for four weeks and the results will analyzed before any final decision is made. It may be that 5 p.m. is still too early for many people who work until 6 p.m. or later. Salamin admitted that the delivery schedule may need to be fine-tuned.

Reinhard Lange to succeed Klaus Herms as CEO in mid 2009

The Board of Directors of Kuehne + Nagel International AG has appointed Reinhard Lange (58) as the successor to CEO Klaus Herms. Since 1999, Reinhard Lange has been a member of the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG with the responsibility for Sea & Air Logistics.

Lange will assume his new function as of June 30, 2009, when Klaus Herms will retire after 40 years of service. Until then, Lange will maintain his current responsibilities and will at the same time act as Deputy CEO.

“We are very pleased that it was possible to appoint a member of Kuehne + Nagel’s top management as successor to Mr Herms,” said Klaus-Michael Kuehne, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “For 36 years Mr. Lange has worked for our Group and has significantly contributed to its success.”

Reinhard Lange started his international career with Kuehne + Nagel in 1971 in Bremen, Germany. In 1985 he accepted a new challenge in Hong Kong where he successfully developed the seafreight business in the Asia Pacific region as a member of the regional management team. He returned to Germany in 1991 as a member of the national management board, where he was responsible for the business unit seafreight. Before being appointed to the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG, Reinhard Lange was Managing Director of the Kuehne + Nagel organisation in Canada.

The humanitarian face of mail

The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA), the Universal Postal Union and Swiss Post unveiled four stamps today to raise awareness of the importance of “humanitarian mail” in times of natural catastrophes or conflicts.

The UNPA issued three stamps, one for each of the UN Offices in New York, Geneva and Vienna, while Swiss Post issued one as a UPU official stamp. It is the first time that the three organizations work together on a common issue.

The four stamps were unveiled during a ceremony at UPU headquarters by Adolf OGI, Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary General on Sport for Development and Peace, Edouard DAYAN, UPU Director General, Robert GRAY, Head of the UNPA in New York, and Ulrich GYGI, Chief Executive of Swiss Post.

The stamps all share a common design – a letter carrier holding a letter in one hand as he floats over a sea of hands reaching for the letter. “The design symbolizes the UN’s and the UPU’s commitment to delivering food, aid, material and mail to the victims of natural disasters or armed conflicts,” explained Robert GRAY. In certain cases, humanitarian mail enables people to find lost relatives and serves as a communication link when other communication means have been destroyed or have broken down.

Swiss Post extends international express drop-off points to 65 rail stations

Swiss Post yesterday announced it was widening its international express services to provide drop-off points for urgent documents and packages at the luggage counters of 65 CFF rail stations in the country.

International shipments will be collected by TNT Swiss Post to be transported through its URGENT channel to over 200 countries. Swiss Post’s PickPost service, for picking up parcels, has already been available in offices at 44 CFF stations and will also be expanded to the luggage counters.

The luggage counters began handling international express deliveries this week and are open to drop-off during their normal opening hours, including weekends and holidays.

Deliveries to European destinations are normally concluded next working day, the group said, and can be followed using its track-and-trace system. The counters will hand documents weighing up to 5kg and parcels up to 10kg for worldwide distribution.

Registered PickPost users can now opt to collect their packages at any of 300 pick-up points – CFF luggage counters and petrol stations as well as PickPost offices – throughout Switzerland once informed of their readiness by SMS or e-mail, rather than wait for delivery at home or in the office.

Collaboration with the World Customs Organization

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the UPU have just signed a new memorandum of understanding. This agreement, aimed at taking greater account of the needs of international trade, recognizes the importance of a single postal territory, the universal postal service, and security measures for international mail transport networks. It represents another chapter in the collaboration between the two organizations which began in 1965. The last agreement, signed in 1994, was aimed at countering drug trafficking.

Customs is a vital link in the international mail processing chain, and the UPU strives to improve mail exchanges between countries by speeding up and simplifying the customs treatment of postal items. In 2005, the UPU estimated that some 43 million parcels had passed through the international service – an increase of 3.4 pct compared to 2004. By promoting the universal service, the UPU seeks to ensure that users of the postal service can send and receive goods and messages from point A to point B anywhere in the world.
