Switzerland bans Post AG outsourcing parcel business

Swiss Federal Justice Ministry has banned local post carrier Post AG’s plans for outsourcing its parcel business to a joint-stock company in which it has a stake, the company said on April 27, 2006. According to the decision, Post AG can offer universal postal services only from its parent company and not from subsidiaries. Outside the parent company, Post AG is allowed only partial operations such as co-operation with agencies or the delegation of transport services on third parties. After the decision, Post AG said it would abandon its plans to transfer the parcel delivery business into a joint-stock company.

Swiss Post to continue job cuts

Swiss Post intends to continue to cut over 1,000 jobs a year in the coming years, director Ulrich Gygi said on April 2, 2006 in an interview for Swiss weekly SonntagsZeitung. Swiss Post employed a total 41,073 persons in 2005. As a result of the streamlining programme in the mail order sector, Swiss Post will cut nearly 2,400 jobs by 2009. Furthermore, the company will restructure its postal offices network. According to Gygi, the postal company spent between 30 mln Swiss francs (USD22.9 mln/19 mln euro) and 40 mln francs (USD30.5 mln/25.3 mln euro) in 2005 for the development of social plans for the affected employees.

Swiss Post delivers another proud profit

The Swiss Post Office said on Friday that it made a profit of SFr811 million (USD616 million) in 2005. The state-owned company, which is affectionately called the “yellow giant”, also reported that it was ready for the partial liberalisation of its letter delivery service from next month. “Swiss Post has again worked well during 2005,” said Swiss Post head Ulrich Gygi. “We made a profit for the eighth time in a row. “The SFr811-million figure is only just under the record result of SFr830 million from 2004.” Swiss Post said that there had been good results across all sectors. Turnover increased by two per cent to SFr7.499 billion.

occupies a strong position in the domestic and foreign press and publications
management market. It focuses on subscription management, the acquisition of
new subscriptions and measures to promote reader loyalty. SPI will now be able to further develop its leading position in the international delivery of newspapers and magazines. The acquisition of MDS AG means that SPI can also offer comprehensive distribution solutions to publishing houses in Switzerland and abroad.
