Krung Thai Bank seeks control of Thailand Post

Krung Thai Bank PLC plans to submit proposals to the Information and Communications Technology Ministry next month regarding the purchase of a major stake in Thailand Post, the Bangkok Post reported.

The bank’s president Viroj Nualkhair said the bank believes that the investment would prove beneficial to both sides.

The bank and its subsidiary, Krungthai Card, would both look to hold shares together with a strategic partner, possibly an overseas postal service company.

Thailand Post may outsource bills

Businesses may soon be able to get their monthly bills delivered to customers more quickly by outsourcing their billing back-office operations to Thailand Post Co.The postal unit of the former Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT) is considering several new service offerings, including e-messaging, which would connect companies such as telecoms and credit-card issuers with its computer network.

Service providers would forward their billing information online and Thailand Post would zap the data to the post office nearest to the billed party. The local post office would print out the bills and deliver them to the address.

Thai Cabinet OKs Telecom Agency Split, Corporatization

Thailand’s cabinet Tuesday approved the division of the state Communications Authority of Thailand, or CAT, into two registered companies, probably by next month. One division will operate the country’s postal service. The other, to be known as CAT Telecom, will operate CAT’s international fixed-line telephone service and hold its share of a joint-venture cellular-phone service with a subsidiary of Hong Kong’s Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. CAT Telecom is expected to make an initial public offering of shares in 2004, CAT Chief Executive Dhiraphongs Suddhinond told reporters after the cabinet meeting. The postal service company isn’t expected to be listed initially, he said.
