UK Parcelforce has big unfair advantage, says TNT boss

Parcelforce has an unfair advantage and should be privatised, the managing director of rival TNT Express Services has claimed. Tom Bell attacked the Royal Mail’s parcel delivery business claiming its VAT exemption was unfair and discriminatory. “It’s not just companies such as mine which are being discriminated against. The taxpayer is losing out because Parcelforce should be paying VAT and those taxes could be used for the greater good of the country,” Mr Bell said. Atherstone-based TNT said the comments echoed sentiments from think-tank The Institute of Economic Affairs. Last year, the IEA said there was no case for Parcelforce to remain in Government ownership and that it should be privatised, even if it led to it going out of business. Mr Bell said: “Parcelforce is subsidised by the Government.

TNT Express invests USD 810,000 in new facilities at Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

TNT Express today announced that it is investing USD810,000 in new facilities in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain (UAE) to establish closer links with its customers and provide them with a greater variety of products. The facilities – to open by the end of the year – are a direct response to TNT’s growth in the Emirates region, as Abu Dhabi in particular, strives to expand at the same rate as Dubai. With the high street outlet in Al Ain offering a full range of products, services and sales staff to provide assistance, the aim is also to serve the increasing needs of our customers. “Many of TNT’s regular customers operate from branches in Al Ain, so this new office will facilitate better communications, performance and delivery,” said Mark Pell, TNT Managing Director, Gulf. “Historically we have serviced Al Ain from Dubai but now we are looking to provide local resources to this market. TNT’s new outlet will establish the company’s presence in Al Ain and will be followed by additional facilities over the next twelve months”, continued Pell.

Business Post rivals say they are growing

Business Post and chief executive Paul Carvell were in the eye of a parcels sector storm this week. At issue is the degree to which its high-profile problems are specific to the company and how much they reflect a downturn in the sector. The group has been under intense scrutiny as the only pure parcels firm to be publicly traded, and stock market sentiment is clear; the share price has plummeted from a steady 690p to just 320p as the group rushed out earlier-than-expected interim results and with them a second warning on profits in seven weeks. Carvell says year-on-year volumes are falling for the first time in the firm’s 34-year history. The decline reflects the market, he says, and rivals are said to have emailed him messages to that effect when he had to issue a profits warning on September 21.

With this new offering we anticipate the business to double in the next twelve months,” said Bryan Moulds, UAE Country Manager, TNT Express.

TNT UAE targets 60 per cent on-line shipments by mid 2006

TNT Express aims to have 60 per cent of its UAE consignments booked through its on-line products by mid 2006 said Mark Pell, TNT’s Managing Director, Gulf. To use the system, customers require an active account with TNT’s on-line service ‘myTNT’ and an e-mail address to which confirmations can be sent. The email contains details such as booking reference, company name, where packages should be collected and the date and time the pick-up takes place. The system will be rolled out in Bahrain and Kuwait by November this year.
