BALTIC STATES – Moving in on Europe’s new stars in the east

Express delivery is making inroads into Poland and the Baltic States, with new partnerships, services and investment launched in 2004. Established in Poland, DHL, TNT and UPS have been joined by FedEx, which launched direct flights in August. Industry sources estimate that Poland supports a EUR500m-a-year total express market, including courier business worth EUR270m – EUR280m, and the market is expanding rapidly.

TNT Austria increases turnover

TNT Express Austria is heading for success in its 2004 business year. In the first 6 months of the current fiscal year the company was able to increase turnover by 12% to EUR 26 million, and results before taxes by 85%* to EUR 2.4 million. The basis for these growth rates was laid by increased consignment volumes, up by 14% to 681,000 units.

TPG completes acquisition of global freight forwarder Wilson

Mail, express and logistics company TPG N.V. has announced today the completion of the acquisition of the Swedish-based global freight forwarding company Wilson Logistics Group from Nordic Capital following approval from the relevant competition authorities. The purchase price is SEK 2.35 billion (EUR 257 million) on a debt free basis. TPG has financed the acquisition from cash reserves. This acquisition is TPG’s first major step into global freight forwarding and further strengthens its position as a leading logistics and express service provider. Wilson has a strong global freight forwarding operation in 28 countries with more than 2000 employees and will add to the existing freight forwarding capabilities within TNT Express and TNT Logistics.

London Parking Fines

A campaign against the imposition of heavy fines caused by the ‘no parking’ policies of London borough councils has resulted in a series of new measures to help ease the problem. TNT Express Services has been spearheading a six-month, industry-wide revolt challenging Westminster and Camden Councils to alter its policies to help accommodate collections and deliveries to businesses in the capital. TNT was facing potential fines up to GBP300,000 per annum under the existing arrangements. TNT, the UK Express Carriers Forum and Westminster and Camden officials held summit talks on July 15th and 16th to try and resolve the difficulties. A raft of new proposals looks like signalling an end to the dispute.

TNT victory on night flights in Belgium

TNT Express has won a long running battle with protesters seeking a ban on night flights at its air hub in Liege, Belgium.

The city’s court of appeal said TNT had adhered to agreed flight procedures and maximum noise levels and had demonstrated its commitment to controlling the environmental impact of night flights. It said it considered Liege’s night operation an essential contributor to the local economy.

TNT operates 43 flights in and out of Liege, its hub since 1998, between 11pm and 5am.
