TNT delivers world's largest zero emissions fleet (UK)

TNT launched the world’s largest fleet of zero emission vehicles, enabling it to reduce its carbon footprint by 1.3 million kg of CO² a year.

TNT’s new 100-strong fleet of unique battery-powered ‘Newton’ style delivery trucks will replace diesel equivalents over the next 18 months. The amount of CO² saved by the environmentally-friendly 7.5 tonne lorries will be enough to fill Wembley Stadium.

The Newton models, manufactured by Smith Electric Vehicles in Tyne and Wear, are the first ever pure electric vehicles in their class that can compete in performance terms with diesel equivalents and, at the same time, deliver a 100 pct reduction in CO² emissions and exhaust air pollutants at the point of use.

The first tranche of 50 trucks will initially operate from TNT locations in London, Basildon, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, Enfield, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Luton, Northampton, Oxford, Paisley, Preston and Wolverhampton. In addition, TNT is also piloting other Smith Electric battery powered vans and trucks in the Netherlands, with a view to rolling them out across its wider European operations.

In 2007, TNT topped the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index achieving an overall rating of 91 out of a possible 100 – the highest recorded score of any company on the DJSI. The feat was all the more remarkable given the nature of TNT’s business.

TNT Express Services, in partnership with vehicle manufacturers, Smith Electric Vehicles, is unveiling the first trucks in the GBP 7 million ‘green fleet’ at the London Wetland Centre.

Eco-friendly electric delivery vans launched in Wuhan (PRC)

TNT and Dongfeng Automotvies yesterday launched trials of China’s first two zero-emissions electric delivery vans in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province.

The electric delivery vans are powered by rechargeable batteries and do not use any petrol. They will operate emission-free in the central city areas of Wuhan, servicing the express delivery needs of TNT’s customers. TNT’s CEO Peter Bakker said that the trial launch of China’s first two electric delivery vans is significant as it will be the first market outside of Europe that TNT is undertaking these trials.

TNT’s CEO Peter Bakker said that the trial launch of China’s first two electric delivery vans is significant as it will be the first market outside of Europe that TNT is undertaking these trials.

He said the trials will reduce CO2 emissions from their own delivery fleet, and that that they would establish six new international express service locations in China this year and plan to also establish a network linking China, Vietnam and Singapore. Peter Bakker said that electric delivery vans are designed mainly to provide short-distance and intra-city express services.

Although electric delivery vans are still expensive in terms of research and development costs, Peter Bakker emphasized that they are cheap to maintain and thus beneficial for the long-term interests of both consumers and for environmental protection.

TNT introduces new brand in Brazil: “TNT Mercurio”

TNT introduces a new brand for its express delivery services in Brazil: “Mercurio” becomes “TNT Mercurio”. Combining two well-established names, the new brand embodies the successful transformation of Mercurio, the Brazilian express leader TNT acquired in January 2007, as well as TNT’s commitment to Brazil.
TNT Mercurio is the leader of the Brazilian domestic express market with a market share of 15 pct. Its operations cover more than 4,000 cities across Brazil. TNT Mercurio serves 35,000 customers and employs 7,000 employees spread over 130 branches and franchises. It provides both domestic and cross-border road delivery services, using its own fleet of 1,500 vehicles and 2,000 sub-contracted ones.
All 1,500 vehicles will be rebranded by the end of 2009. The new brand means a lot to the Brazilian express market.
TNT Mercurio wants to strengthen its leadership position by investing in new vehicles, depots and infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art call center in São Paulo.
Besides growing in the Brazilian domestic market, TNT Mercurio is seeking to connect other South American countries by road.
Furthermore, TNT is looking into ways to strengthen its air connectivity between Brazil and Europe, linking its South American road infrastructure to international air routes.

Dutch to discuss opening up of postal market

The Dutch government will brief Parliament in a fortnight on whether it will open up the domestic postal market to full competition on July 1, as previously envisioned.

Dutch Junior Economy Minister Frank Heemskerk said in March he hoped to open the market in July depending on developments in Germany and labour talks between Dutch postal companies and trade unions.

TNT has the remaining monopoly for letters of up to 50 grammes, with the market estimated to be worth about 1 billion euros (USD 1.55 billion) in 2007.

The Netherlands postponed the full opening of the market, due in January, partly because of the introduction of a minimum wage for postal workers in Germany, which it said impedes competition and where TNT had hoped to expand its operations.

The economy ministry has commissioned a report by a research firm on the impact of the German minimum wage, which it will present to parliament on May 20, Heemskerk wrote in a letter to lawmakers on Tuesday.

He will also present a report by EU Internal Markets Commissioner Charlie McCreevy on mail market liberalisation.

Heemskerk cited an agreement struck by trade unions and TNT’s rivals, privately owned Sandd and Deutsche Post’s Dutch unit Selekt Mail, last month regarding labour conditions for postal workers. “Based on these documents, Parliament and I expect to have a comprehensive picture and can judge if the legislative proposal for July 1, 2008 can be implemented,” Heemskerk wrote in the letter.
