Royal Mail axed by Bristol

Bristol City Council has sparked a row after it was revealed it had axed its contract with the Royal Mail for the bulk of its post.

Former Lord Mayor Peter Abraham accused the Labour-run council of hypocrisy – weeping “crocodile tears” over 29 proposed post office closures in the Bristol area, then taking business away from the Royal Mail and handing it to a private operator.

After next Monday all the city council’s second-class post – which Councillor Abraham (Con, Stoke Bishop) believes is about 90 per cent of all the mail the authority sends out – will be collected by the Royal Mail’s rival, TNT.

This is likely to include council tax demands, letters notifying parents of school place offers and notices to people who may be affected by planning applications.

Mr Abraham said: “I’ve had a leaflet telling me that corporate mail services will be changing for non-first-class posting from March 31.

“The mail will be collected every day from the Council House post room by TNT and delivered within two days.

“We’re told the council will pay 21 pence per letter. I understand the Royal Mail’s rate for franked second-class mail is currently 21p but is due to go up on April 8.

Should TNT stay in Germany or should it go?

Dutch mail and logistics company TNT NV has more to gain by staying in Germany despite competitive snags as buoyant growth prospects will make up for a shrinking business at home in the Netherlands.

Europe’s second-biggest mail and logistics company by market value, TNT is expected to lose its remaining monopoly in its lucrative domestic market this year, with competitors already eating into its market share and profitability.

It is seeking to reinforce its German operations but has threatened to pull out of the country due to what it sees as preferential treatment for Deutsche Post.

Earlier this month, a German court ruled in TNT’s favour in a case it brought against a minimum wage for postal workers, allowing it to continue paying its lower wage.

Europe’s largest economy introduced a minimum wage of up to 9.80 euros (USD 15.15) per hour for its roughly 220,000 postal workers in January.

The German government said it would appeal against the court ruling, and a verdict could take months, however.

That appeal is hanging over the company and the German postal sector like a sword of Damocles, Dutch daily De Telegraaf quoted Mario Frusch, the chief executive of TNT Post Germany, as saying on Thursday.

He said the company has put its investments in Germany on hold for the time being. TNT Chief Executive Peter Bakker told Reuters in December the company had frozen its investments due to the minimum wage issue.

But TNT needs to take a long-term view of the German mail market, one of the big three in Europe, as it has the potential to drive future growth and offset Dutch losses.

TNT progresses towards full integration of Speedage

TNT announces the successful integration of its Indian road express division, TNT Speedage, into TNT’s global information technology system, called Global Link. As a result, customers using TNT’s domestic road infrastructure in India can now benefit from a 24-hour real-time track and trace facility of their shipments. The IT upgrade is a major step towards the transformation of Speedage into a full-fledged express delivery services business completely integrated in TNT’s global network.

TNT now offers a common IT network for all its branches in India, including 168 Speedage offices. TNT has invested approximately euro 4 million (INR 18 Crores) in hardware and IT network to achieve a complete Internet and computer sharing during the IT integration process. All 168 Speedage locations are connected to TNT’s Bangalore data centre, using MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching Architecture), IVPN and dial up networks. This launch makes TNT India the first multinational express services company to provide a single platform to track any consignment shipped through TNT – be it international or domestic, air or road.

Global Link is backed by PC-based Customer Interface Technology (CIT) tools that enable customers to book consignments online, view consignment status and history, and access proof of delivery. TNT offers a secure online environment, which protects customers’ confidential shipping information.

In India, TNT’s IT Data center is located at ITPL Bangalore. TNT’s full-fledged global IT hub is in Atherstone, UK. It houses a 24- hour real time online Track and Trace system, which is linked worldwide and is continuously updated, second to second.
