TNT has been acclaimed a one-in-a-thousand and joined an elite band of the UK's business champions.

MP John Denham, the Secretary of State for the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, announced that TNT is one of just 36 companies in the UK to be awarded the title of Investor in People Champion. The champions programme recognises employers who have boosted the performance of their businesses through the way they manage and develop their employees.

TNT, based at Hartlebury Trading Estate, Hartlebury, was selected for champion status from 36,000 organisations which are all accredited to Investors in People (IiP).

The company embraced the IiP philosophy and, as a result, realised the potential of its workforce and improved its performance.

TNT was one of the first businesses to have champion status in 2004, when it was one of the first of 16 organisations to achieve the accreditation.

As one of the champions, TNT will work with IiP to share its expertise with other employers to promote best practice in all areas of people development.

The honour follows on from past TNT success in relation to the welfare of the company’s employees. The company was the first in the world to gain global IiP accreditation back in 1994 – a position it has maintained for the past 10 years – and the first to win IiP laurels in the express delivery sector.

TNT Express Bahrain facility awarded prestigious TAPA-A security certification

TNT Express has been awarded a TAPA-A security certification for its Bahrain operations. The certification is the latest in TNT’s continued efforts to further improve its business operations within the Gulf.

TAPA – the Transported Asset Protection Association – is an association of professional high-tech companies promoting higher security standards in the international shipping and air cargo industry. Security of transported assets is a major customer concern and TAPA certification assures the customer of the security precautions adopted by the TNT as standard practise.

TAPA certifications are awarded after stringent evaluation of facilities, ensuring that they comply with set global security standards. Grade A is awarded only to those facilities that meet the highest possible standard requirements.

“We continuously endeavour to progress all aspects of our business practices. Over the last couple of years, we have also achieved the OHSAS 18001 standard for occupational health and safety, ISO 9001 for operational excellence, ISO 14001 for environmental management and SA 8000 for social accountability,” said Ahmed Gamal, TNT’s Country Manager, Bahrain. “Adopting TAPA standards across our network in the region will greatly contribute to the extensive growth of our business in the global high tech market.”

Lost data disc found in depot (UK)

A missing computer disc holding medical records of 160,000 children has been found – stuck in a conveyor belt at a giant mail depot.

The CD, which had been lost in the post, was spotted by a worker at the TNT parcel office.

It is thought to have become lodged in the workings of a mechanical sorting system at the distribution firm’s main depot in Nine Elms, South West London.

A further EIGHT discs containing patient records are still unaccounted for.

But the find raises hopes that those – plus two others holding personal details of half the population – could be lying unnoticed, rather than in the hands of identity thieves.

TNT alerted police as soon as the disc was discovered on Saturday.

The CD vanished after being posted from City and Hackney Primary Care Trust to St Leonard’s Hospital in East London.

It was one of nine containing information on 168,000 patients which have gone missing from NHS trusts across the country.

The losses were revealed just before Christmas, following a Government-wide data security review.

That was sparked after Chancellor Alistair Darling admitted in the Commons that child benefit records of 25 million Britons had gone missing after being sent on CDs through insecure post by HM Revenue and Customs.

The Metropolitan Police serious and economic crime unit is still searching for them.

Senior officers believe they were probably mistakenly thrown away by a civil servant.

It also emerged that details of three million learner drivers had also been lost after being sent to the US.

There is no evidence any of the missing discs have fallen into the hands of fraudsters or blackmailers.

But their loss has raised concerns about the Government’s new Connecting for Health database.

The system, costing tens of billions of pounds, would hold medical.

TNT to offer print management after TDG tie-up

TNT Post is offering print management services to its clients after signing a 12-month agreement with TDG Group.

The private-sector rival to Royal Mail will use the tie-up with the London-based firm to offer end-to-end print management services, a creative review process and environmental consultancy to direct mail clients. It will also use TDG’s services for its own print.

TNT’s agreement makes it the latest postal operator to offer some form of print management. Most notable among those who have moved into the market is Deutsche Post World Net, which in February 2006 bought a controlling stake in Williams Lea.

TNT Post has recently launched an initiative to cut its carbon emissions and TDG is hoping it can help, having recently been awarded ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation. It also has the ISO 9001 quality management stamp.

“With this agreement, we can advise TNT’s clients on how to be greener and open up a creative delivery to ensure they maximise their demands,” said Tom Gorman, TDG managing director. He added that he hoped to increase turnover from GBP 6m to GBP 8m in 2008.

A spokeswoman for TNT Post said the firm had worked with TDG in the past and the renewed link was “a great opportunity” for the firm. The group had formalised the relationship after TDG, which has recently launched a green audit for suppliers, stepped up its environmental focus.
