TNT Express aims to grow into the market leader in emerging markets such as China, India and South America, and maintain its strong position in Europe, according to managing director Marie-Christine Lombard.
The express company will continue to invest in the integration and upgrading of recently-acquired companies in China and India, and consider acquisitions in South America to strengthen its business there, she said in a presentation at the company’s Analyst Day in London last week. In South America, Brazilian subsidiary Mercurio would be used as a launching platform for an integrated strategy, with a regional road network and strong intercontinental Europe-South America traffic flows.
TNT Express will also launch a new Liege-Singapore-Shanghai eastbound routing for its B747 China-Europe freighter service in the second quarter of next year, she disclosed. This would improve the eastbound capacity utilisation, which currently lies at just 39pct , and create new opportunities from South-East Asia and China. The westbound Shanghai-Liege route has a 92pct capacity utilisation. On the financial targets for TNT Express, Lombard said that the company is aiming for organic average annual revenue growth of 8pct -10pct and a return on sales of 12pct-13pct for its international and domestic business by 2012.
The emerging platforms (emerging markets) should generate average annual growth of 15pct – 20pct and a mid-single-digit profit margin by 2012. On the group’s European parcels strategy, TNT Post managing director Harry Koestra told analysts that a focused “country by country” approach would be required since market entry was not easy. TNT Post currently has parcels revenues of some EUR 400 million and a 9pct profit margin.
Read MoreA majority of MPs are positive about a proposal by postal firm Sandd to allow a limited liberalisation of the postal market, reports Tuesday’s Financieele Dagblad.
Sandd’s proposal is intended as a temporary arrangement following last week’s announcement that a fully open market has been indefinitely postponed.
The plan would allow newcomers on the market, such as Sandd itself, to deliver a certain volume of the post that is currently under the monopoly of TNT (letters weighing under 50 grams).
The coalition Christian Democrat and Labour partners and the opposition liberal VVD party say the request by Sandd is reasonable, reports the Financieele Dagblad.
All three parties have called on junior economic affairs minister Frank Heemskerk to give a new date for the full liberalisation of the postal market as soon as possible.
The association which represents commercial post users (VGP) says the postponement of liberalisation will cost Dutch companies EUR 200m a year. They have written to prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende to urge a fast solution, reports the Financieele Dagblad.

The upper house of the German parliament, in which German states are represented, is likely to decide on the minimum wage at its meeting scheduled for December 20.
‘If the minimum wage is adopted in Germany then we will look at our options very thoroughly, everything is open. And we will include the winding up of PIN in our option finding or scenario thinking, once the fact is confirmed,’ TNT spokesman Pieter Schaffels said.
This morning, the Financial Times Deutschland reported that majority shareholder Axel Springer plans to wind up its mail services unit PIN by Christmas and write-down 600 mln eur due to the bankruptcy.
The German government recently decided to expand minimum wages to 8-9.80 eur per hour agreed by services union ver.di and an employer’s association dominated by incumbent Deutsche Post World Net AG to the whole industry, challenging margins of Deutsche Post’s competitors.

The service includes worldwide delivery with a range of time options, Saturday delivery and late collections, and free packaging. The service also includes next-morning delivery free of charge for orders made until 2 p.m. the previous day.
According to legal standards, all diagnostic samples need a package corresponding to the packing regulation IATA/ADR P650. The packaging solution developed in Sarstedt was tested and approved by the German federal agency for material research und control (BAM).
TNT said it provides customers with the packaging solution “medpak CEN” free of charge including external and secondary packaging. The external packaging is annotated with all the stipulated declarations and labels, e.g. “UN3373” label. This also contributes to the automatic sorting of shipments within the standard network of TNT Express.
