Doors open on new jobs at TNT's GBP 3m Swansea depot

TNT has established a dynamic presence in South Wales in the shape of a new GBP 3 million depot facility in Swansea.

The state-of-the-art 36 loading bay facility operates in tandem with the existing depot at nearby Llantrisant – giving Wales two fully integrated TNT depots – offering local, national and international express delivery services.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: “This state of the art £3 million facility is another example of how Wales is attracting internationally renowned businesses. The speed at which Swansea’s commercial sector is growing is remarkable and the fact that the UK’s biggest courier operator has decided to make this investment to serve this growing market better is a massive testament to that growth

“Freight logistics is a vital sector in Wales – accounting for around 6 per cent of employment and contributing GBP 2.5 billion to the Welsh economy.

“We also have to recognise that freight transport has a huge environmental impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. The Assembly Government is keen to help road freight operators meet this key challenge. That is why our Wales Freight Best Practice programme aims to reduce carbon emissions – and help Welsh road freight operators improve their operational efficiency.”

Employing up to 65 people – including more than half-a-dozen new positions – the new facility, equipped with all the latest mechanical handling technology, is located just three miles away from the previous ‘satellite’ depot on the Garngoch Industrial Estate.

TNT Express wins Hanse Globe 2007 award

TNT Express has won the new “Hanse Globe 2007” award for sustainable logistics organised by the public-private body Logistik-Initiative Hamburg.

“Many companies have applied with their future-oriented projects,” commented Dr. Mojib Latif, professor for ocean circulation and climate dynamics at Leibniz Institute for sea sciences in Kiel and chairman of the jury. “TNT’s worldwide sustainability project ‘Planet me’ for the reduction of CO2 emissions was very convincing,” he said. “It comprises the whole TNT business worldwide, including 31 locations in Germany.”

In Germany, for example, TNT Express deploys 156 natural gas vehicles in cities that produce hardly any emissions, as well as ecological vans with soot particle filters and modern technologies for route optimizing.

Additionally, the company has invested in 60 video conference systems to reduce business trips, and builds new branches taking environmental issues into account. In the new Hamburg-Allermöhe depot, for example, an integrated leafy roof area makes for a better heat balance and a convenient micro-climate. Moreover, TNT minimises its consumption of water, energy and electricity.

The Logistik-Initiative Hamburg brings together some 300 companies and institutions in Hamburg with the aim of developing the city’s position as the leading logistics metropolis in Northern Europe.

TNT and Hongkong Post join forces to tap Indian market

TNT has signed a strategic partnership agreement to provide express services in India with Hongkong Post, the postal service provider in Hong Kong. The companies are also likely to tap into the emerging markets in the Middle East in the next couple of years.

The companies will together provide the Speedpost FreightPlus service, which enables Hongkong Post to deliver items to India in two to three days instead of five to six days as in the past. Shipments can also be handled in multiple pieces under one consignment, leading to greater flexibility.

Under the partnership agreement, Hongkong Post will provide collection and customer services for items to be delivered overseas by express. TNT will collect the items to be delivered to India. The items would be delivered through the Indian logistics company Speedage, which has an established network in India and was acquired by TNT in 2006. Hongkong Post will provide customer service support and manage item tracking and tracing requests.

TNT and Hongkong Post is also considering co-branding initiatives to provide time-definite and premium services for existing customers.
