Geodis enhances China forwarding services

Geodis has strengthened its services to Hong Kong and China, following the recent acquisition of TNT Freight Management (TFM) which doubled Geodis’ exporting capacity in Asia. The company intends to incorporate Geodis Overseas, its existing air and sea freight activities, under the Geodis Wilson umbrella before the end of this year.

“Geodis has traditionally had a strong presence in Hong Kong and China,” said Jamie Cuthbert, managing director of Geodis UK, “and the scope of our organisation has grown significantly since the acquisition of TFM. We now have 210,000 square feet of warehousing space and 620 employees across our nine offices throughout the region. With the pooled volumes this has brought, we have further enhanced our offering to the market-place. The deal has allowed us to implement an even more competitive pricing structure, increase the frequency of our services and provide a greater coverage of the region.

Geodis Wilson’s air freight service out of the region operates direct consolidated air shipments on a daily basis. For sea freight, the company functions as a Non Vessel Owning Common Carrier (NVOCC).

TNT Green Approach Wins RBS Recognition

TNT Financial Services – the specialist division of the company serving the UK’s financial services sector – won acclaim when it was singled out to take the ‘Corporate Responsibility Award’ from The Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) at the Bank’s 2007 Supplier Excellence Awards.

TNT was praised for its commitment to continually challenging the environmental benefits that the company delivers under its ongoing commercial partnership with RBS. This included reducing the number of miles covered by its vehicles while serving the RBS distribution network throughout the UK, the subsequent reduction of its ‘carbon footprint’ along with unique initiatives such as piloting the world’s first ever environmentally-friendly, battery powered, high performance zero emissions 7.5 tonne vehicle.

The awards follow TNT’s success as the sole distributor of cheques, internal mail, stationery and marketing materials for a number of RBS brands including NatWest, Coutts, Direct Line, Lombard, Churchill, One Account and Tesco Personal Finance.

Mail items are collected via eight TNT collection depots across the UK and then transported to TNT’s sortation centre in Lount, Leicestershire before being conveyed to 27 strategically located TNT depots across the country in readiness for delivery.

TNT flies in to help charity auction showpiece

A three-year crusade to create a unique memento of rugby history and raise thousands of pounds for one of Britain’s best-loved charities was facing disaster before express delivery giants TNT stepped in.

Champion fundraiser Russell Burton spent three painstaking years collecting all but two of the signatures of all the players and coaching staff involved in the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final.

Each member of the English and Australian squads had signed the matchday programme so that he could auction it on behalf of Mencap – the UK’s leading learning disability charity.

With the deadline for the London auction looming, Russell still required two Aussie names to complete the precious programme. It was despatched to the other side of the world but then it became snagged in bureaucratic red tape in Japan. At that point Russell, from Basingstoke, Hants, called TNT to try and get the one-off souvenir back in time to go under the auctioneer’s hammer.

TNT flew the programme free of charge, back to the UK just in time for TV chat show host, Michael Parkinson, to successfully bid for the item at London’s Whitehall Palace.

TNT job cuts necessary, says advice group

The planned reorganization and job cutting at post company TNT is necessary, and extra steps may be needed in future if costs continue to rise, according to an independent report by the Boston Consulting Group.

Postal workers unions asked Boston Consulting to examine whether serious job cuts announced by the company earlier this year were unavoidable.

TNT plans to cut its workforce by 7,000 by 2010, but has said that figure could rise to 11,000 if the unions won’t agree to a pay freeze and cuts in secondary benefits.

The company is facing increasing competition from firms that pay workers for each item they deliver, rather than a traditional salary with pension rights.
