TNT to cooperate with independent study of reorganisation plans

TNT NV will cooperate with an independent study of plans for a major reorganisation, the company said.

The study was requested by several labour unions and a works council within TNT post that are seeking clarification on the restructuring, one of the largest in Dutch history.

Acknowledging that ‘it is common for social partners to get a ‘second opinion’ study done on complex and thorough reorganisations’, TNT said the Boston Consulting Group would carry out the independent investigation, which is expected to reach completion in June.

Last month TNT faced the possibility of a rare showdown with ‘shocked’ unions after announcing plans to cut between 6,500 and 7,000 jobs from its total global staff of 80,000.

The company, which is restructuring amid increased competition, had previously said 11,000 jobs would go.

Asia’s first road network expands into Vietnam

TNT today announced the expansion of Asia’s pioneering integrated road network into Vietnam following a further euro 6 million investment. Adding to an original investment of euro 2 million, the enhancement brings the total investment to date to euro 8 million. TNT plans to extend the Asia Road Network to reach China through the north-eastern border of Vietnam by the end of 2007. Once completed, the network in Southeast Asia will cover almost 60 per cent of the region and link over 120 cities across 4,000 km.

First introduced at the end of 2005, the first phase of TNT’s Asia Road Network linked Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. With 24×7 real-time Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) tracking of TNT’s container trucks, the service resulted in double-digit growth in overall volumes within a year, particularly among customers with high-value goods such as electronic, automotive and computing components.

Royal Mail fears exodus

The exodus of big business from the Royal Mail could see as many as one in five letters being handled by competitors such as Dutch group TNT and the UK Mail arm of courier group Business Post, it has emerged.

Senior Royal Mail executive Stephen Agar has admitted latest figures show that about 12.5% of the post was lost to the competition last year.

But with major customers continuing to ditch the Royal Mail at alarming rates, Agar said that figure could rise to 20%.

The defection of companies with major bulk billing operations to Royal Mail’s rivals has become increasingly embarrassing for the former state postal monopoly.

Earlier this year, the £8m-a-year BBC TV licensing operation took its postal needs to UK Mail, following an earlier decision by the Department of Works and Pensions to switch its £12m-a-year contract to the same operator.

That followed the decisions, recently revealed by the Evening Standard, of BT and British Gas group Centrica to move to TNT for their mail needs, together worth GBP 150m over three years.

Most of the mobile phone companies, banks and utilities have also decided to quit Royal Mail, citing price and quality of service.

Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier, pictured, today defended the business’s ability to handle competition.

‘We’ve gone through the process [of market liberalisation] that BT went through over 25 years,’ he said. ‘We’ve concertinaed it into three.’
