Where is Asia’s Express Market going?

There’s only one way to go and that is UP. In 2007 we will see more new players entering the market as Asia’s economies continue to grow. Courier industry is characterized by high entry barriers. It needs huge investment in infrastructure and technology and there is intense competition in the industry. The market for courier industry can be divided into individual, corporate and small and medium enterprises. On the basis of type of delivery, it can also be divided into overnight delivery and same day delivery services.

Courier companies are using information technology to enhance the quality of their customer service and obtain competitive edge. There are only a few global courier companies like Fed Ex, DHL, UPS and TNT and there is intense competition among them with each one trying to establish its superiority. In India, presently, DHL, Blue Dart and Elbee are the major players contributing to 70% of industry’s revenues. An interesting observation in the past three years , is that the big Four are now entering the domestic market, an area that they have been relatively weak in. This could also result to a backlash on their main core international businesss. Asia’s domestic courier market has always been the strength of the home-grown operators with intimate familiarity of the terrain.

UK TNT expansion programme continues apace

TNT is continuing to drive through an expansion programme designed to strengthen its strategic infrastructure and enhance its customer service levels across the UK and Ireland.

The programme, spanning an 18-month period stretching into the first half of 2007, has already seen TNT Express Services open a National Customer Contact Centre, three new depots, a fashion clothing distribution centre and a state-of-the-art archiving facility, creating in excess of 700 new jobs.

It began when the company bucked the trend for transferring customer call centres overseas when it delivered 240 new jobs in the North East by opening a sophisticated customer help centre at Team Valley, near Gateshead.

New operational depots in the North West of England and Scotland, namely Preston, Glasgow and Liverpool are, and will be, providing an additional 300 new roles in the fast moving, time sensitive world of express delivery.

In the Midlands, TNT opened a 700,000 square feet warehouse as part of a long-term agreement with high street clothing retailer, Primark. The new and extended clothing distribution centre is expected to create up to 250 new jobs.

The second phase of the programme will see new and upgraded depots established in South Wales and Northern Ireland during 2007.

Deutsche Post CEO Zumwinkel threatens to launch price war in 2008

Deutsche Post AG chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel told journalists his company is prepared to make drastic price cuts in the German mail market should it lose significant market share to rivals when its virtual monopoly on letter delivery expires in 2008, the Financial Times Deutschland reported.

‘If I lose too much market share, then I have some price cuts in reserve that will certainly throw our competitors into disarray,’ Zumwinkel said in New York.

The chief executive did not provide further details on the possible price cuts.

The newspaper said that Deutsche Post currently controls about 90 pct of the German letter delivery market. This business last year accounted for 30 pct of Deutsche Post’s total revenue and almost half of its profits.

However, rivals such as TNT, Pin and a range of local delivery services are eager to expand their presence in the German market.

The newspaper said that TNT and Pin want to gain a 10 pct share of the German letter delivery market within the next five years.
