TNT giving generously

TNT has once again been named as one of the UK’s most caring companies with the news that TNT Express Services figure prominently in a list of the country’s most generous givers to charitable organisations.

The company features in an elite group of 141 companies that donate at least one per cent of their pre-tax profits to worthy causes. This qualifies each company to feature in the ‘PerCent Standard’ – a list of top corporate benefactors complied by the Business in the Community organisation.

The recognition is designed to encourage commercial organisations to embrace the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility and put something back into the communities in which business and industry operates.

Tom Bell, Managing Director of TNT Express Services in the UK & Ireland said: “I am immensely proud of our leading, and sustained, role in making a positive contribution to communities the length and breadth of Britain.

Key steps to DM/postal services: Time to deliver

Although Royal Mail still dominates the UK’s postal services market, deregulation has triggered strong growth in competition. Private operators have signed access agreements to allow mail they have collected and sorted to be fed into Royal Mail’s network for delivery.
Royal Mail made 1.2 billion access deliveries in the past year, compared to just 87 million the year before. In the five months to August 2006, access volumes continued to swell, and the latest figures from regulator Postcomm show that access deliveries now account for 10.5 per cent of Royal Mail’s total letters volume.
Royal Mail’s launch on 21 August of its Pricing in Proportion charging structure, reflecting that size and not just weight will determine a mailing’s delivery costs, has given companies further food for thought. For those considering a switch from Royal Mail to a rival access operator, there are now many more issues to consider. And there is certainly some confusion.
“In my experience, the big mailers aren’t confused because they have experts in their business who understand it, and can look at a new player when it comes along,” says Triangle Management Services’ associate director of mail Geoff Lambert. “But once you come down below the top 100 or 200 mailers, it’s true that people haven’t quite been able to understand what’s going on because they don’t have the expertise in-house.”

TNT creates Worldwide Coverage for Economy Express

TNT Express today announced it has extended its Economy Express product offering to cover all countries worldwide from Europe.

This expansion complements TNT Express’ focus on globalising its express product offering and further strengthening network capabilities with the extension of Economy Express (from Europe) to an additional 150 destination countries worldwide.

Economy Express through the combined usage of TNT’s Express Road Network and air network capabilities offers customers an economical alternative for their less urgent shipments.

Customers will experience ease of use and reliability when shipping with Economy Express to the new destinations. Transit times for this day definite service are typically 1-3 days longer TNT Global Express. Shipments may contain items up to 30kg with a total maximum consignment weight of 500 kilos.

Marie-Christine Lombard, Group Managing Director of TNT’s Express division said: “I am proud that TNT Express is the first Express company in the world that is able to offer Economy Express to worldwide destinations. By using a combination of the Express Road Network and the air network we can now offer greater service flexibility and extended market coverage to customers for the new destinations. We are excited that our customers now have the choice between Economy Express and Global Express when assessing their shipping requirements.”

The expansion of Economy Express coverage will continue in 2007 with the extension of the product offering from/to other regions as well as offering Economy Express inbound to Europe, where this is currently not offered.

The 'Big Orange's' Green Revolution

TNT has today taken a major step forward in its efforts to make the planet greener and cleaner.

TNT Express and TNT Logistics, in partnership with Smith Electric Vehicles, has unveiled the world’s first high performance 7.5-tonne zero emission electric vehicle, due to go into service in London.

Two TNT vehicles, both ‘Newton’ models, will be the first ever in their class that can compete with their diesel equivalents – but without the polluting effects of ‘controlled’ (i.e. nitrogen oxide and particulate matter) and CO2 emissions.

TNT’s vehicle will operate from the company’s Barking depot, while the TNT Logistics model will be based at its Starbucks operation in Basildon, Essex.

If the green trial proves successful, TNT will consider adding 200 other zero emission vehicles to its fleet to serve in other urban locations in the UK. This would result in significantly reduced controlled and CO2 emissions and consolidate TNT’s position at the top of the ‘green league’ in the transportation sector.

The acquisition of Speedage in India is completed and the acquisition of Hoau in China is awaiting final approval by the local authorities. The last element of growth for TNT Express is the expansion into the broader express market through “Special Services”.
