An outstanding performance by Atherstone-based TNT Express Services in the UK delivery market has been rewarded with two top awards at a ceremony honouring the cream of the transport industry.

Scotland set for privatised post trial

Britains first fully privatised door-to-door post service to rival the Royal Mail is to be trialled in Scotland.

Glasgow and Edinburgh have been chosen, along with Manchester, for an experiment which will give customers the choice of having collection, sorting and delivery carried out entirely in private hands.

TNT's contrarian view

While other express carriers have built airfreight networks with numerous international flights, TNT is keeping its eyes on the ground. The Dutch integrated carrier is establishing a domestic ground network based on the acquisition of a large Chinese parcel and logistics operator, Hoau Logistics Group.

Hoau, established in 1995 and based in Heilongjiang, has more than 1,100 depots in China, along with more than 3,000 trucks and 12,000 employees. This gives TNT a huge footprint in the world’s favorite growth market, but it is not an express network, admitted Marie Christine Lombard, managing director of TNT Express.

European postal companies call for complete liberalisation in 2009

Chief Executive Officers of national postal companies in the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Germany have started a joint initiative for a complete opening of the postal markets in Europe by 2009. In a policy paper addressed to Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy, CEOs Peter Bakker (TNT), Erik Olsson (Posten AB), Jukka Alho (Finland Post Corporation) and Klaus Zumwinkel (Deutsche Post World Net) plead for a sustainable postal sector in the next decades that should be realised by a complete market liberalisation by 2009 and the modernisation of the universal service.
