TNT to Complete Acquisition of HOAU by 2006

TNT is expected to complete acquisition of HOAU Logistics Group by the end of this year. TNT is buying HOAU Logistics, the biggest freight & parcels operator in mainland China, for USD 135 million, which is much higher than estimated CNY 900 million. The acquisition price was disclosed by Tian Yu, director general of the Jiamusi Municipal Merchants Bureau, at Heilongjiang Provincial Merchants Promotion Conference. However, TNT says any detail shouldn’t be disclosed now that it is in the process of acquisition at present. Ken McCall, CEO of TNT China, told journalists that TNT will increase its Chinese employees to 12,000-14,000 from existing 4,000-5,000 upon the completion of the acquisition.

Netherlands postal market liberalised from 2008

The Dutch postal market will be fully liberalised as of January 1, 2008, the Dutch economy ministry said on April 13, 2006. The full liberalisation of the Dutch postal market will lower prices, allow better quality service and give other companies equal business opportunities. Presently, TPG Post, the mail business of Dutch mail and logistics group TNT NV, has a monopoly on the postal market for letters up to 50 grammes. According to the Dutch Government, the postal market in the country will still face problems after its liberalisation due to differences in value added tax (VAT) regulations in European countries. Germany, which will also liberalise its postal market as of 2008, announced it will limit or end the VAT exemption to Deutsche Post. The British Government, however, does not intend to terminate the VAT exemption to UK Royal Mail.

French Postal Observatory: 2004

The aim of the Observatory is to provide sector players and the public with major sector indicators (revenues, traffic volumes and number of access points). To provide a sufficiently complete view of the markets in question, the Observatory is not limited to those activities requiring an authorisation (distribution of items of correspondence, including cross-border), but also covers mail preparation, express mail and parcel activities. This is why we also questioned firms which are outside of the scope of application of the authorisations regime, and the federations representing them. This publication presents the results of the initial collection of information covering the activity of firms in France in 2004. It is an initial approach to postal markets.

EC gives TPG space on German and UK postal markets

The European Commission (EC) wants to give TPG Post, the mail business of Dutch mail and logistics group TNT NV, and other foreign competitors an equal chance on the German and UK postal markets while abolishing the payment of value added tax (VAT) on mail services, the EC said on April 10, 2006. An exemption from VAT on these markets has been granted only to the former monopolists Deutsche Post and Royal Mail for most of their services. According to the European Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs (fiscal affairs), the VAT differences are not in line with the European Union (EU) competition rules.
