US FedEx chief warns on EU over-regulation

Rigid labour markets and excessive red tape are deterring US investment in Europe and pose a “huge danger” to the continent’s economy, Fred Smith, chief executive of FedEx, has warned.

Restrictive regulations and heavy social obligations on employers made US companies, including FedEx, cautious about expanding across the Atlantic. “Most US CEOs are particularly worried about the continued proliferation of regulations that come out of the EU,” Mr Smith said.

While it is uncommon for such views to be voiced publicly, they are shared by many US chief executives who are increasingly in favour of higher-growth opportunities in Asia and the US.

TNT gets temporary reprieve from labour union strikes

TNT will not be confronted with strikes at its Dutch mail delivery operations starting Friday, a spokesman for the Abvakabo FNV trade union said. ‘TNT has indicated that there is room for compromise regarding our demands,’ said the spokesman. ‘The Friday ultimatum is therefore off the table and we await what TNT will offer next Tuesday, when we will enter a new round of negotiations to see how far the company is willing to compromise.’

Dutch TNT to buy German Rheinkurier

TNT will take over German sector firm Rheinkurier, TNT said on October 19, 2005. According to TNT, after the takeover of Rheinkurier the company will become the second-largest mail delivery company in Cologne, western Germany, behind local post carrier Deutsche Post. Rheinkurier has 125 employees and services 1.0 million residents. TNT also said it would open a branch in Hamburg, northern Germany, in November 2005, and announced plans for its network to cover the whole of the industrial Ruhr region in western Germany by early 2006.

Japan Post in mail distribution talks with TNT, Nippon Express, Sankyu

TNT NV is a candidate to set up a mail distribution company with Japan Post, Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

According to sources, Japan Post is eyeing several candidates at home and abroad to set up goods distribution companies. Currently, Japanese law effectively prevents local mail companies from teaming up with foreign partners.

Other candidates mentioned by the paper are Nippon Express and Nippon Steel Corp’s Sankyu Inc affiliate.

TNT was not immediately available for comment.

Japan Post eyeing tie-ups for international distribution of goods

Japan Post is nearing the final stage of negotiations on comprehensive tie-ups with several major distribution companies such as TNT Post Group of the Netherlands and Japan’s major delivery company Nippon Express Co., a news report said Wednesday. The company wants the tie-ups, expected to be concluded by the end of the year, so it can set up joint firms to distribute goods for companies and gain a foothold in Asia, the largest daily Yomiuri Shimbun said.
Under the current law, Japan Post can only transfer international mail it receives in Japan to a postal service operator in another country. But the company wants to expand its services to better respond to the demands from domestic companies, such as speedy delivery, the paper said.
