TNT accelerates its China business

TNT logistics supply chain solutions and mail services, is to adopt a cooperation form to expand its service network in Mainland instead of a franchise form it announced at the end of 2004, a source said on September 4.
Indeed, its previous franchise development plan has been replaced by the alliance-based cooperation development plan, according to the TNT headquarters.
The company changed the earlier plan because there has not yet been a franchise act in the mainland, an executive at the cooperation development division of TNT told reporters. For the moment, scores of Chinese agents are responsible for TNT’s China express business and its 25 branch companies for its international express business. In the cooperation form, its Chinese partners operate under the TNT brand and their sales rely on TNT, while its Chinese agents do not operate under brand in the franchise form and just take some fees.

Royal Mail set to ‘lose a third’ of its market when letter monopoly ends

The Royal Mail is to face a three-way battle for customers and will lose up to a third of its revenues, one of its main rivals is predicting. Peter Bakker, the chief executive of Dutch post and logistics group TNT, says he expects at least two serious rivals to emerge to Royal Mail when its monopoly on letter delivery ends next year. Each, says Mr Bakker, will take 10 to 15 per cent of Royal Mail’s business. He was speaking as another of the expected challengers to Royal Mail, Deutsche Post, was revealed as the suitor of Exel Logistics, the UK delivery group. Both Deutsche Post and TNT are already making inroads into the UK postal market, though mostly in what is known as the ‘access’ area. This is where post is collected from business clients, scanned and sent to regional centres, where it is then passed to the Royal Mail for sorting and delivery.
Mr Bakker said his group soon hopes to be in the ‘consolidation’ area, where TNT will sort mail but Royal Mail staff still deliver. It is installing high-tech sorting equipment in its 69 regional hubs in the next few months.

TNT to sell off French truck unit

TNT has put up for sale its loss-making French trucking operations and expects to complete a deal this year, the Dutch post and logistics group said yesterday. The activities represent 60 per cent of the French unit, which has proved a drag on revenues for several quarters and has resisted efforts to stem losses running at EUR17m (USD20.6m) in the first half on revenues of EUR117m. TNT will also divest those parts of the remaining activities of the unit where it cannot earn its cost of capital, in order to focus on areas such as supply chain solutions for the automotive industry. French and international buyers are interested, said Peter Bakker, TNT chief executive, adding that it expected to complete the majority of the disposals this year. In total the portions to be sold account for 25 per cent of French logistics revenues of EUR250m, he said. The unit generated 5 per cent of logistics revenues of EUR1.2bn in the second quarter, and 2 per cent of group sales of EUR3.4bn.
