New TNT Express depots in Germany and Italy

TNT Express has laid the foundation stone for a new logistics centre at Rostock airport in northern Germany, investing EUR 3.7 million in the new depot. In addition, the company opened two new branches in Italy this month.

In spring 2009, the current depot in Guestrow, which is 17 km away from Rostock, will be moved to the new site, which lies on a 12,000 sqm plot of land. Some 40 employees will work at the new facility.

Separately, TNT Express Italy has opened two new branches. The new depot at Verona, northern Italy, where about 200 staff are employed, is located in an industrial area close to the nearby motorway and benefits from the latest security facilities. The site is used for local distribution during the day and as a sorting hub for nationwide shipments during the night. TNT also opened a new branch at the coastal port of La Spezia following an investment of some EUR 400,000.

TNT opens first "green" depot in the Netherlands

TNT is today opening its first CO2 emission-free depot in Veenendaal, the Netherlands. The official opening is to be attended by Harry Koorstra, member of TNT’s Board of Management and Group Managing Director Mail The depot is the first in a series of “green” buildings to be used by TNT as part of its worldwide environmental programme, Planet Me. The global mail and express delivery company aims to cut the CO2 emissions of all of its buildings, totalling three million square metres of real estate in over sixty-five countries.
The building produces its own energy in a sustainable way. More than 300 solar panels collect sunlight and convert it into energy.
The depot was designed in close collaboration with the VolkerWessels construction company. TNT required the building to be CO 2 neutral in operation.
The combination of techniques and measures in one business site allows energy savings of over 70 per cent compared with a traditional depot. VolkerWessels expects other end users of sustainable business premises to choose the same solutions. TNT’s green depot has been operational since mid-October and functions as a mail distribution centre for Veenendaal and its surroundings.

CEO Peter Bakker comments: “As we had already highlighted in our October 16 trading update the conditions in our European Express business have significantly worsened in September and the first weeks of October. Air volumes in September were down an unprecedented 10 pct, while Road volumes were showing low growth. We expect this pressure on volumes to persist at least in the current quarter.
On the positive side the Mail business has performed in line with our outlook. Also we refinanced our capital requirements in August, ahead of the deepening of the financial crisis in September and October. This, coupled with our robust cash flow, leaves us on a solid financial footing.
In these times management focus on efficient operations is even more essential. Our Master plans in Mail continue successfully, we are aggressively implementing the announced € 125 million cost optimisation programme in Express, we focus on improving air network efficiencies and we target all other cost areas for savings as well. At our analyst meeting on 4 December 2008, we will provide further details in this respect.”

TNT sets up new gateway at Osaka Kansai International Airport

TNT announced the opening of its new International Gateway at Japan’s Osaka Kansai International Airport. The TNT International Gateway in Osaka Kansai will not only strengthen the express service capability of TNT’s Northeast Asian International Express Network, it will also shorten the transit time for deliveries into Osaka, from China by one day.
TNT customers will now be able to enjoy the one-stop comprehensive express delivery service between China and Osaka, one of Japan’s key manufacturing hubs, in the shortest possible time. Consignments, leaving Shanghai and other Chinese coastal cities, can now be delivered directly to Osaka Kansai. This time saving is crucial for TNT customers mainly in the electronics and apparel/ textile industries, where time critical deliveries remain one of its most important competitive advantages.
At the same time, Vietnam which has been poised as one of Asia’s key manufacturing economies and is one of the fastest growing exporting countries to Japan in Asia, will also benefit from the shortened transit times to Osaka Kansai.

TNT drivers embrace electric vehicles

TNT claims its drivers have adapted well to the new fleet of electric trucks brought in earlier this year. The company introduced 47 battery-powered 7.5-tonne zero-emission Newtons from Smith Electric Vehicles, in May this year. They have a top speed of 50mph, a 70-mile range from one battery charge, and are expected to cut 1.3 million kg of CO2 a year from TNT’s carbon footprint.

The vehicles, which have replaced diesel equivalents, are currently carrying out deliveries and collections in cities and towns across the country from 21 depots.
TNT says it is currently considering introducing a further 50 electric vehicles in 2009.
