TomTom and Vodafone UK To Introduce the World’s Most Advanced Travel Time Information System for Superior Navigation in the UK

TomTom, the world’s largest navigation solutions provider, and Vodafone UK today announce that they will jointly develop a new traffic information system that will deliver superior travel time information.

This exclusive agreement will see TomTom’s in-house patented technology use information from the Vodafone UK network to provide accurate, real-time information on the speed and direction of cars travelling on all major roads across the UK. Standard class mail becomes trackable from desktop

Mailers rejoice as the Mailex Corporation releases an affordable real-time mail tracking system. Web-based tracking data is generated from an initial scan of a mailing upon induction into the USPS system. From the initial scan, the entire lifecycle of the mailing can be tracked by state, zip code and individual piece. As the mail is routed nationally, subsequent scanning takes place every step of the way. Each scan event is transmitted to a mail-tracking server and available for viewing.
Embracing this new, low cost technology, Mailex offers this tracking service to every mailer by incorporating the existing automated barcode with the tracking code. Taking the guesswork out of the estimated 7-10 day delivery time for Standard Class mail answers the top question all marketing executives need to know — Did the mailing hit yet? Gone are the days of waiting and wondering if your message was delivered.

Indian postal department (DoP) to use RFID for logistics posts

If all goes well, the postal department (DoP) will be the first organisation to use the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology for its express parcels and logistics posts. “We want to be the pioneer in the express industry to use the RFID technology,” John Samuel, general manager, business development and marketing directorate, said. To realise its dream, the department proposes to make huge investments in the cutting-edge technology. The department has already put forward a proposal of Rs 12,000 crore to the planning commission during the 11th Five Year Plan for its consideration. “Our aim is to provide high quality services and meet the business needs of our customers along with increasing the customer base. The department plans to allocate Rs 6,000 crore towards upgrading its technology,” Samuel added. He noted that the department plans to invest in technologies such as RFID and web-based customer response system. Leading post offices worldwide, including the US Postal Service, Royal Mail and Deutsche Post, have reformed themselves by investing in cutting edge technology. “The postal department with over 1.55 lakh post offices across India, is in the process of setting up a national data centre that would directly connect over 1,300 post offices nationwide,” a senior business development official said. “Computerisation of all the post offices will streamline the operations of the department. In addition, the department hopes to wipe out its budgetary deficit of around Rs 1,200 crore,” he added. The official said that the investment for the technological upgrade will be allocated out of the “planned fund.”

IBM unveils new RFID software

IBM has announced new technology that more easily allows organisations securely share and analyse real-time data generated by radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.

The new WebSphere RFID Information Center technology is based on a recently completed EPCglobal RFID standard called EPCIS, which provides a standard way to securely communicate the data created by sensors and RFID tags.

Using the IBM platform, the data can also be integrated with existing business information and shared with trading partners.

The IBM WebSphere RFID Information Center platform has already been successfully deployed by Unilever, the e-customs project ITAIDE in Europe, and pharmaceutical distributor AmerisourceBergen.

Shay Reid, AmerisourceBergen vice-president for integrated solutions, said, “AmerisourceBergen sees tremendous potential in the IBM WebSphere RFID Information Center, which will be a key component to meeting track and trace regulatory requirements in California.”

Reid said the platform would become the data backbone in a pilot programme that will enable AmerisourceBergen to improve its service by quickly authenticating products and transactions through direct data exchange with pharmaceutical manufacturers.”

RFID Information Center receives data from RFID middleware, which aggregates, filters and interprets data directly from the readers.

RFID Information Center then stores, manages and enables sharing of all or portions of the data with various business applications across the enterprise, and with trading partners.

More information on the platform is available here: http://www.ibm.com/software/data/masterdata/rfid/
