PalletFORCE enhances quality of network service with major investment in IT

PalletFORCE’s commitment to continuous improvement in quality has been underlined by a major investment in a state-of-the-art IT system, providing comprehensive real-time ‘track and trace’ for all of the Network’s Depots and their customers. The installation, designed by logistics specialist Trans-aXion, registers every pallet with a unique identification, which is used to trace deliveries throughout the distribution process. A dedicated section of Trans-aXion’s web-site allows customers to chart the progress of pallets in real-time from dispatch to delivery, the latter confirmed by electronic signature capture.

Lockheed Martin gets USD120M US Postal Service pact

Lockheed Martin said it received a contract valued at as much as USD120 million to upgrade the US Postal Service’s systems that recognize handwritten and machine-printed addresses on letter mail. Lockheed Martin and suppliers aim to boost the USPS’s ability to automatically read addresses above the current 92%, the company said. Lockheed has been working with the Postal Service on this effort for 10 years; the new contract continues their collaboration.

Global mail services seen as new frontier for RFID

Postal and courier mail services are expected to become the second largest market for radio frequency identification item-level tagging following the retail sector, according to a research firm.

The technology already is being deployed at carriers to secure access to vehicles, trailers, and sorting and shipping areas. “We see a strong move toward revamping total postal systems to make it much easier to send and receive the correct package more promptly with better cost and security control,” said Peter Harrop, chairman at research firm IDTechEx on Thursday. “That is why Arabia is rolling out smart post boxes, and Korea is looking to change its receiving and shipment to a holistic system with near real-time traceability.”

GLS invests 20 million euros in scan technology

From October 2005 onwards, General Logistics Systems B.V., Amsterdam (GLS), is introducing approximately 18,000 new mobile terminals with scan function and 5,000 scan stations throughout Europe. “In cooperation with IBM and Symbol Technologies we have developed a special technology that offers customers advantages for parcel and express shipments that are unique in the market”, says Rico Back, CEO of General Logistics Systems B.V., Amsterdam (GLS). The technology will be introduced gradually. GLS is investing approximately 20 million euros.

Belgravium in new sector thanks to UK postal contract

Belgravium Technologies, the company that makes hand-held systems which track goods through the supply chain, has won a new contract to supply hand-held units to TNT Mail. TNT hopes the deal will help it to secure the number two slot behind Royal Mail in the UK postal market. TNT will use the hand- held units to assist the sorting out of the mail. TNT said the units will provide real-time data capture to TNT’s warehouse operations.
