Interview – Aramex aims to be world's number 5 express operator

Aramex, the Middle East-based independent express company, aims to grow into the world’s fifth-largest express operator through selective acquisitions and by expanding its partner network, a senior executive told CEP-Research.

Although the “Big Four” – DHL, FedEx, UPS and TNT – were clearly “in the premier league”, Aramex wanted to head the “second division” of regional players, Adrian Horsley, Vice-President Express Services, said on the sidelines of last week’s Asia Pacific Mail & Express 2006 conference in Singapore.

The Jordan-based and Dubai-listed company expects its 2006 revenues to grow to US$330 million from USD232 million in 2005, largely due to acquisitions of smaller freight companies in the Middle East and Europe over the last year, Horsley said. In 2005, it generated about 55% of revenues from international and domestic express transport, and about 33% from freight forwarding. The company, whose key markets are the Middle East and India, has some 260 offices in 45 countries in total.

“Our mission is to be recognized as the fifth-largest global distribution player by 2008. With the Global Distribution Alliance, Aramex has a true global international express distribution system that is 95% managed and controlled by us,” Horsley declared.

Emirates Post to spend up to USD500 million on Asia acquisitions

Emirates Post will put a strong focus on Asia under its “aggressive” international expansion strategy, according to director general Abdulla Al Daboos. The Dubai-based company is ready to spend about USD400 – USD500 million on acquisitions in a bid to become an important regional player, he told participants at the Asia Pacific Mail & Express 2006 conference in Singapore this week.

Outlining the organisation’s growth strategy, Al Daboos commented: “This means buying, like everybody else”. Emirates Post currently has three ‘due diligences’ under way in India, two in the UK and one other in Europe, he revealed. It is also looking at China. The fast-growing postal operator is looking in particular at courier and freight forwarding companies, he said.

An Emirates Post Group holding company would be formed shortly, and a 49% stake would then be floated on the Dubai stock exchange, Al Daboos said. He aims to raise about USD1 billion from the IPO.

Door delivery of postal mail likely in Dubai soon

Door to door delivery of postal mail in the emirate may not be a distant dream for Dubai residents. A proposal to introduce the system was discussed at a high-level meeting organised by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) at the Dubai Municipality headquarters yesterday.

Those attending the meeting discussed the feasibility of a new postal address system with other relevant public sector departments including Etisalat, Empost, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Dubai Police and Civil Defence. RTA proposed a new public address system which will enable residents to receive mail and utility bills etc. at their doorstep. Under the proposed new system, all name plates on buildings across the emirate will have to specify the specific building number, community number and street number.

According to Badar Al Siri, RTA’s Traffic Department Director and Chairman of Road Naming and Numbering Project Committee, the new public address system would be introduced soon.

“We have covered about 70 per cent of the emirate already by giving numbers and names for streets and buildings. We are currently working to cover the rest of the areas. The new system will be good for residents as well as companies. This will help the companies to trace the correct spot of the residents thus both parties to save time,” he said.
