UAE delegation unfolds Emirates Post’s growth plans at European postal conference

Addressing the conference, Mr. Abdullah Al Daboos, Director General of Emirates Post, highlighted how in just three years after becoming a corporation Emirates Post had emerged as a leading and dynamic postal player in the region, driven by innovation and diversification. ‘Emirates Post believes there is a need for greater dynamism in postal business. As private companies increasingly enter areas that were once the sole domain of posts, we need to reinvent ourselves to meet the changing customer expectations and business needs,’ Mr. Daboos said. Mr. Daboos referred to Emirates Post’s plan of diversifying into logistics, financial services and retail operations through the postal network. He said Emirates Post was in negotiations to acquire a financial services company and a logistics & cargo company, as part of its diversification plan.

DHL UAE wins Hitachi data systems logistics contract

Under the contract, DHL UAE takes bulk receipt of spare parts from HDS in The Netherlands, flies them into its express logistics centre in Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZA) where they are stored ready for express despatch to regional distributors and customers on demand.

‘DHL was selected after meeting our requirement for high service levels and after demonstrating its international and regional experience on other HDS operations,’ said Henk Witteman European Spare Parts Logistics Manager, HDS.

DHL UAE, the Emirates’ leading air express and logistics provider, has won a fiercely contested Middle East logistics solutions contract from leading storage solutions provider Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Limited.

‘Other determining factors included the proximity of its DAFZA facility to Dubai International Airport thereby securing speedy turnaround when orders for spares are placed, or a ‘repair and return’ service is needed.’

Middle East transport sector to undergo major changes

The Middle East’s transportation industry including the $10 billion (Dh36. 8 billion) logistics and express mail market is set for more competition, consolidation and privatisation in the coming five years, a study from The National Investor (TNI) said.

“Following the worldwide convergence towards ‘one stop shop’ supply chain and logistics management solutions, we believe the transportation industry in the Middle East is on the verge of revolutionary developments such as consolidation and privatisation,” said the comprehensive research report obtained by Gulf News. The report comes in the wake of the ongoing initial public offering (IPO) of Arab International Logistics Company that plans to acquire Aramex International.

The Middle East logistics market is valued at more than $10 billion with the GCC market accounting for about 10 per cent of this. The UAE accounts for roughly 35 per cent of the GCC but Saudi Arabia leads with a 55 per cent share.

Deutsche Post keen to expand abroad

Deutsche Post is keen to expand its international operations. The company says that it is examining the possibility of acquiring a stake in both the Italian postal service operator, Poste Italiane, and the postal service of the United Arab Emirates, Emirates Post. According to press reports, Emirates Post is preparing for privatisation. Deutsche Post already cooperates with this company, which is said to be profitable. Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister, has said that Poste Italiane will be partially privatised within the next 18 months. The latest figures show that this company has more than doubled its profit to 236m euros, while growth of 11 per cent has been achieved in turnover, to 9bn euros.

UAE Emirates Post to buy Financial Services Company

UAE postal authority Emirates Post is nearing the purchase of a local financial services company with operations spreading across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and some other Arab countries, it was reported on March 2, 2005.

The targeted company operates a network of some 42 branches. Emirates Post will announce officially the acquisition and the value of the deal within a one month period, the company’s director general, Abdullah Ibrahim al-Daboos, said, declining to mention the company’s name.

Al-Daboos also said that Emirates Post was to shortly announce the acquisition of a regional cargo and logistics company.
