Mail remains vital to business today, says Pitney Bowes

Michael J. Critelli, chairman and CEO of Pitney Bowes Inc. affirmed that, “contrary to the predictions of a paperless environment, mail remains a vital piece of the business communications flow,” during a presentation at Solomon Smith Barney today.

Critelli noted that there are more than 425 billion pieces of mail generated annually around the world, and 200 billion in the U.S. alone. “The mailing industry in the U.S. is a $900 billion industry that drives over eight percent of the GDP annually. Organizations understand the power of mail to exchange critical information, products and payments with their important stakeholders and, compared with other forms of marketing, businesses and non-profits can reach out to prospects in a non-intrusive manner.” He also mentioned that, though no one can predict the future of mail as a communications tool for organizations, “Pitney Bowes expects to have great growth opportunities in mail for a very long time, regardless of business mail volume trends, given the massive size of the mailing industry worldwide.”

192.com loses database decision to UK Royal Mail

Royal Mail has won the first round of a court action to protect its rights in a database known as its “postcode address file,” or PAF. The High Court rejected an argument from the company behind 192.com that the PAF had been used under licence.

Database rights stem from a 1996 European Union Council Directive on the legal protection of databases. It grants copyright protection to database creators in the selection and arrangement of the information contained in databases, regardless of whether the database creator owns the copyright in the information contained within the database.

Polish Post Office to buy stake in WEA

Poczta Polska (PP), the Polish post office, plans to purchase several cargo planes from a firm owned by Zbigniew Niemczycki, White Eagle Aviation (WEA), which has provided cargo services to PP. This idea is one of several to build a strong logistics company, said PP director for strategic development, Dominik Czajewski. Other ideas include acquisitions of smaller companies by PP, or development of PP subsidiaries to operate in this sector. WEA is 71-percent owned by Niemczycki’s Curtis Group, with the remaining stake controlled by the German travel firm TUI. The cargo firm WEA generates 85 percent of its income through contracts with PP. Earlier this year, the company closed its charter passenger services, following a loss of ZL5m in 2002. At present the company is divided into two groups, one for cargo, and one for services that have not yet been specified. The latter group may be offered to PP, sources say.

UK Royal Mail launches 9am special delivery service

Royal Mail has launched a direct challenge to the courier market with a Special Delivery packaged delivery service guaranteed by 9am the next working day, or your money back. With highly competitive costs, beginning at GBP6.95 to anywhere in the UK, the move is set to challenge the market, driving costs down.

Ross Drake, Head of Special Delivery, said, “With the next day delivery market totalling over 426m items sent in the UK every year, this move into the 9am market could potentially bring Royal Mail a further GBP50 to GBP100m annual revenue. We are looking to take 25% of this market that has already grown by 66% over the last five years. However it is a competitive space so it is even more vital to provide the service that businesses need.
