NetDespatch delivers Web services for Amtrak Express Parcels

NetDespatch has developed a unique web-based collections management system for UK overnight delivery company Amtrak Express Parcels Ltd. Called ‘Online Collection’, the new system will allow requests for ‘repair and return’ collections and ‘just in time’ deliveries, anywhere in the UK, to be controlled and tracked in real-time using the Internet.

UCI Logistics for Jaguar

UCI Logistics has won a contract to give logistics support to Pirelli in the supply of wheel and tyre assemblies for Jaguar X-Type manufacturing. UCI will collect alloy wheels from Reynolds in Italy and deliver by road or rail to Burton-on-Trent where the tyres are fitted. Next, UCI will take the complete assemblies to Pirelli’s warehouse at Halewood using a dedicated road shuttle service. At the Halewood site UCI takes responsibility for supplying 12 assembly types to the Jaguar X-Type line.

Royal Mail Service Lets Mailers Pre-book Mailings

Royal Mail has released details of a new booking center service that allows advertisers and their agencies or mailing houses to register upcoming activity and get a unit cost for their specific mailings.
Royal Mail said this lets advertisers more accurately calculate the cost of mailing as part of the campaign. The agency said the cost of the package depends on three key considerations: The size and weight of the items; when they need to be delivered; and the number of items. Mailings can be booked with a range of delivery options from next day to seven days.

Regulator backs down over threat to Royal Mail

THE POSTAL regulator is set to back down in its dispute with Consignia over the opening up of the postal market by slowing down the introduction of competition to the Royal Mail.
The move, due to be announced next month by Postcomm, follows a warning last week from Consignia that first and second-class stamp prices may have to rise by 3p a year if its monopoly is broken up too quickly.

Post offices finally called to account

The UK postal monopoly is about to disappear. Good riddance.
Everyone understands that customers benefit from competition. Competition drives price rivalry, efficiency and value for money, and causes operators to put new services on the market. However, many postal monopolists argue that outlawing competition is the only way to safeguard a nationwide (or “universal”) postal service. This is nonsense. There is not a shred of evidence that opening the postal markets to competition stops the provision of a basic nationwide postal service. Far from assuring a universal postal service: monopolies will kill the distribution industry.
