E-mail officially overtakes traditional post in the popularity stakes

A study by Internet measurement company NetValue found 550 million e-mails were sent and received by UK homes in January – nearly 300 million more than the domestic amount handled by the Royal Mail.
Alki Manias, managing director of NetValue UK, said: “This is a real milestone for e-mail. Although only widely available to the public since 1995, the e-mail has surpassed hundreds of years of domestic Royal Mail services in a few years.

More Competition in EU Postal Market

The European Parliament on Wednesday approved plans to inject more competition into the EU’s postal market. The assembly voted to accept measures agreed by EU governments last year to reduce the monopolies enjoyed by national postal services. Under the measures, from 2003 only items weighing less than 100 grams will be the exclusive domain of post offices unless a competitor charges three times the basic tariff. Current EU rules put the monopoly threshold at 350 grams.

BT Fleet Interested in Consignia Fleet Contract

Janet Entwistle, general manager of BT Fleet (the commercial vehicle division of BT Group – telecommunications), confirmed that BT Fleet has submitted a formal “indication of interest” in taking over the fleet operations of Consignia, formerly the Post Office. Like BT, Consignia is seeking outside partners for its 37,000-vehicle fleet. But Ms Entwistle said the former Post Office had provided “very little financial information” on plans for its vehicle leasing and maintenance operations.

SNP predicts disaster if Post Office is privatised

The SNP yesterday claimed Scotland’s postal service is heading for disaster if plans for privatisation go ahead.
Launching a new campaign outside Burghead post office, shadow communications minister Kenny MacAskill compared the future scenario in Scotland to the situation in Sweden, where the privatisation of its services in 1996 created a list of catastrophic problems, mainly due to burgeoning costs.
