CWU warns of imminent peril to universal post

THE Communication Workers Union warned yesterday that Britain will lose its universal postal service within weeks if ministers allow competition plans to go ahead.
A third of the bulk-mail postal market will be opened up to competition from next month, unless regulator Postcomm shelves its plans.
Postcomm also wants to put the entire postal service at the mercy of the free market by 2006, with the barest minimum of regulation.
CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said:
“Postcomm has seriously overstepped the mark with these proposals.
“If implemented, they would be nothing less than a dagger to the heart of the universal service.”

Hays presses for guidance on post

Hays yesterday called on the postal regulator to press ahead with its plan to end Consignia’s monopoly on bulk mail. It also urged Postcomm to grant the support services group permanent licences for its mail services. Bob Lawson, chairman and acting chief executive, said the group, which was awarded three interim mail licenses in September,needed certainty on how the market would develop over the next one-to-three years.

Hays slumps as concern grows for future

RECRUITMENT and services firm Hays expressed concerns about the future of its fledgling postal business yesterday, as it posted an 8.5 per cent slump in half-year pre-tax profits to £115.1 million.
The company has been delivering mail to certain restricted postcodes for the past year through special temporary licences issued by postal regulator Postcomm.
