What should we make of Allan Leighton, interim chairman of Consignia, letting it be known that he opposed the (10% executive)increase? At first glance this appears reassuring, but on further reflection it is down right worrying. If this was a regular, publicly-listed company, such a rift between chairman and chief executive would have had the financial community laughing in the streets.

Hays sees 'Evolution not Revolution' of UK mail market

Bob Lawson, chairman and acting chief exective of Hays PLC said he believes the UK mail market is facing a period of evolution rather than revolution despite the crisis facing Consignia. Speaking in a conference call Lawson told reporters: “This whole development of the mail market is evolutionary and it is going to take time. There are no quick revolutionary wins in this thing, it’s going to be long term evolution because what we’re impacting is major corporations deciding to resource and handle their mail differently.”

Fears grow over postal shake-up

Controversial plans to end the UK’s mail monopoly are set to be watered down amid government concern that postal services will collapse if competition is introduced too soon. Within the next 10 days, Consignia will warn the regulator that its losses have climbed from £1m a day to £1.5m after the worst January on record. This evidence of a worsening financial crisis at the group is expected to trigger a climbdown by Postcomm which is now showing increased willingness to respond to consultation.

SRA must heed rail freight requirements

The test of the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) is to deliver an upgraded West Coast Main Line (WCML) which has the additional capacity required for rail freight growth. If the SRA fails on this test then a key part of its Strategic Plan will be called into question.” That was the statement made by Graham Smith. planning director of rail freight operator EWS at the recent National Rail Conference in London.
