TNT Post makes promotions after regional growth

TNT Post has appointed Charles Neilson as Divisional Managing Director of its regional business and promoted Mark Davies to Neilson’s former role of Managing Director of TNT Post Doordrop Media.
In his new role, Neilson will be responsible for growing the number of business customers in the regions. He has worked at TNT for 14 years and is particularly experienced in strategic planning and technology.
According to TNT, its regional business has experienced impressive growth in the last 12 months: to date, TNT serves more than 1,000 SME customers and last year grew its volumes by more than 100m items.
Neilson said: “The development of the regional businesses is a tremendous success story for TNT Post and offers further expansion opportunity, particularly in the end-to-end market.
“By growing this part of the business, more and more local businesses and SMEs will be able to benefit from high quality, innovative and cost effective services for the first time ever.”
Davies will take over Neilson’s responsibilities for growing TNT’s Doordrop division, which was formerly known as Circular Distributors, in a promotion from his role as the division’s new Business Director.

Postcomm to review final mile delivery plans (UK)

Postcomm is reviewing the barriers postal operators face in the final mile delivery, due to the decline of competition since the postal market fully opened up in 2006.
Postcomm will explore whether competition in delivery is necessary to provide benefits to customers and, if so, seek to identify the key barriers to entry for delivery competition.
The postal regulator is assessing the potential benefits to ensure a healthy universal service and to support a range of reliable, innovative and efficient postal services.
While competition through access agreements has developed quickly since Royal Mail negotiated the first agreement in 2004, competition in delivery has declined for the last two years.
Postcomm has already identified a number of possible barriers, such as Royal Mail’s VAT exempt status, behaviour and redirection of mail. The regulator will also be seeking views on new and emerging issues affecting the growth of competition in delivery, such as market uncertainty, zonal access requirements, customer purchasing behaviour and limitations of using alternative networks.
A proposal will be issued in August 2008.

TNT tops Royal Mail on branding

The survey was commissioned by Business Superbrands UK Ltd and canvassed the views of more than 1500 business professionals. Within the list of top 500 brands, TNT is ranked 118, 22 places ahead of Royal Mail, its leading competitor in the UK postal market.

The announcement comes as TNT Post, celebrates its fourth anniversary of becoming a downsteam access provider in the UK mail market. Since signing the agreement in April 2004, TNT Post has made great strides in its mailing proposition for UK businesses. In the last 12 months, TNT Post’s downstream access business has experienced more than a 60 per cent growth in its mailing volumes and the company now delivers an average of 160 million items a month. With its broad range of services, TNT Post enables both businesses large and small to benefit from the high quality and innovative services that competition has brought to the postal market.

European discontent over earnings divide

The present credit, food, and fuel crisis in Europe is sparking anger from unions and workers across Europe who says that the divide between rich and poor is becoming wider than ever and that the ‘fat cat’ culture continues to spread unchecked across many industries where employees are often paid relatively low wages.

Workers at Germany’s Deutsche Post are to begin strike action in May after the Verdi trade union failed to secure a 7 pct pay rise for 130,000 postal workers. Deutsche Post said it was always ready to talk but the 7 pct rise put forward by the union was unaffordable. Verdi has recommended that workers begin strike action early next month.

In the Netherlands, trade unions are planning to step up the pressure on the Dutch mail company TNT, with strikes next week to support their call for a 3.5 percent wage rise. In Slovenia, protesters were on the streets protesting about low pay and fat-cat companies in Europe.

In the UK, PM Gordon Brown is trying to placate members of his own party over the scrapping of the 10 pct income tax rate for low earners. The move has been seen as deeply unpopular and at odds with Labour’s claim to support the poorest citizens. With Labour already struggling in opinion polls ahead of local elections on May 1st, Labour MPs are becoming worried that they could see their seats go over what are national issues. In the public sector, unions say that wage caps, typically around 2.5 pct in the UK are now insufficient to match the increasing cost of energy and other rises in the cost of living.
