Deutsche Post chief to quit amid tax-dodge probe

Klaus Zumwinkel will resign as chief executive of German mail and logistics group Deutsche Post, the company said on Friday, as a tax-dodging probe threatened to ensnare more rich Germans.

The 64-year-old, a pillar of Germany’s corporate establishment who has led Deutsche Post for 18 years, came under pressure to go after prosecutors said they suspected him of dodging about 1 million euros (USD 1.5 million) in taxes by transferring money to tax haven Liechtenstein.

“In the interest of the company he will resign” on Monday, Deutsche Post said in a brief statement on its Web site. “The executive committee respects this decision and proposes to the supervisory board to accept.”

Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck told reporters Zumwinkel had admitted evading taxes. A spokesman for his ministry told a news conference that any others who thought they could be implicated in the probe should consider turning themselves in.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said his departure from Deutsche Post was unavoidable, while Steinbrueck said the probe had caused considerable “moral damage”. The state is Deutsche Post’s biggest shareholder with a 31 percent stake.
Zumwinkel could not be reached by Reuters for comment.

However, commenting on his plans to resign as Deutsche Post chief, he told newspaper Bild: “I wanted to usher in a new era, but with a different changeover than has happened now.”

Zumwinkel said he would work closely with the authorities, telling Bild: “I will take an
active role in clarifying the questions about my private finances.”
Hundreds more rich and prominent Germans faced a visit from police as part of the sweeping probe into offshore accounts.

Royal Mail make changes to collection plates (UK)

Royal Mail is making changes to collection plates as a result of two separate initiatives, namely:

Sunday and bank holiday collections – changes to collection plates

Part of the agreement given by Postcomm to Royal Mail’s request to stop Sunday and Bank Holiday collections was for Royal Mail to amend the information on the collection plates.

Postwatch has been advised by Royal Mail that the removal of all references to Sunday and Bank Holiday collections to its collection plates will be completed by 25 February.

Changing collection plates to show final collections as close to 12.00 midday (Monday – Friday) as possible

In response to Postcomm’s Decision Document on its review of Royal Mail’s collection and delivery times Royal Mail has undertaken a review of collection points that have a collection time before 12:00 midday (Monday – Friday) to move as many back to midday or later where it was reasonably practical and make economic sense to do so. However, there will be some instances where it may not be possible in every instance due to practical and commercial restraints (further details are attached).

Royal Mail has advised us that all reviews are due to be completed by end of February/early March.

TNT to offer e-invoices with digital signature

TNT announces it will offer secured electronic invoices with digital signature in over 30 countries by the end of March 2008. Called ‘Express Invoicing’, the new service will be available for customers in most European countries, Australia, Singapore, Hong-Kong, South Africa, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. TNT’s web-based e-invoicing solution is free of charge. TNT already offers e-invoices in 37 countries around the world, with another ten countries preparing to introduce the paperless invoice this year. TNT estimates that it could eventually eliminate up to one million paper invoices per month.

‘Electronic invoices save time, money and trees’, says Jan Willem Breen, Director Marketing and Sales of TNT’s Express division. ‘But with internet fraud on the rise, customers also ask for legally recognised techniques like digital signatures that authenticate the source of invoices and protect the documents’ integrity. TNT invests in technology to offer more convenience and security to its customers.’

For customers, TNT’s e-invoicing service reduces paper processing costs and improves the accounts payable management process. To benefit from the new service, all they need is an Internet connection and an e-mail account. TNT’s Express Invoicing offers an easy-to-use and secure method for accessing, controlling and archiving invoices. Instead of a paper invoice, TNT sends an e-mail to its customers directing them to a secure website, where they enter a password to access their downloadable electronic invoices.
