Dutch TNT and UK Royal Mail in race for ABX Belgium Distribution

Dutch mail and express deliveries group TNT NV and UK rival Royal Mail are the two remaining bidders for ABX Belgium Distribution, Belgian De Tijd newspaper said on November 18, 2006.

The owner, Belgian railways SNCB/NMBS, aims to complete the deal within three weeks.

The EU competition authorities obliged NMBS to sell the unit by the end of 2006.

ABX Belgium Distribution is a market leader in the domestic parcel deliveries market. The unit has an annual revenue of 90 mln euro (USD 115.5 mln) and a 700-strong workforce. Furthermore, 650 trucks of third parties are running for the company.

ABX Belgium Distribution was earlier part of ABX Logistics Worldwide SA/NV (ABX), which was sold by NMBS to UK private equity firm 3i Group Plc and the management in August 2006. The deal included air cargo, sea cargo, customs, logistics and international transport activities of ABX Belgium.

Partnership delivers a winning performance

One of the UK’s mailroom experts has won a customer service award in partnership with insurance giant Royal & SunAlliance.

TNT Managed Services – a division of Britain’s leading business-to-business express delivery operators, TNT – collected top honours in the Customer Service category at the coveted British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) Awards held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London.

Since 2004, TNT has been responsible for the management of all 16 Royal & Sun Alliance’s mailroom locations in the UK, as well providing an inter-branch mail distribution service covering 21 sites.

First-class standards in performance provided by TNT exceeded agreed performance indicator levels, prompting Royal & SunAlliance Facilities Management Service Manager Stuart Boardman to comment: “TNT have not only set a benchmark for the implementation and delivery of outsourced services, they also set a very high standard within our supply chain solutions.”

TNT picks Four to handle battle against Royal Mail

TNT Post has briefed Four Communications to manage its corporate reputation as the delivery firm seeks to grab market share from Royal Mail.

The UK arm of the Netherlands-based company was launched two years ago after Royal Mail’s 350-year monopoly ended. Letter-delivery was opened up to full competition this year.

Four’s hire spells the end of a two-year relationship with Financial Dynamics.

Account manager Lucy Bennett said the agency would promote TNT Post’s services to the business sector via national, regional and specialist titles.

The Four team, headed by CEO Nan Williams, reports to TNT Post CEO Nick Wells, although its day-to-day contact is head of marcoms Simon Dolph.

TNT Post has won ‘downstream access’ contracts with Barclays, LloydsTSB, BSkyB and Telewest – it collects and sorts all mail from the companies before final delivery by Royal Mail. The firm is currently working to cut Royal Mail out of the loop altogether.

Apax sells TSO to Deutsche Post

U.K. buyout shop Apax Partners Worldwide LLP said Wednesday, Nov. 15, it sold its 71% stake in U.K. publisher the Stationery Office to German postal services and logistics group Deutsche Post AG for an undisclosed price.
Deutsche Post is buying TSO through its majority-owned Williams Lea Group Ltd., a corporate information management consultancy, which will use TSO as a launch-pad for its move into public sector business process outsourcing, or BPO.
The private equity firm declined to comment on its return on investment in Britain’s document service.
“The acquisition of TSO gives us a pre-eminent position in public sector BPO,” said Williams Lea CEO Tom Griffiths, in a statement.
The Bonn-based parent company, anticipating the loss of its monopoly next year, hopes the purchase will further reduce its dependence on its domestic mail market.
