UPS says its plan for DHL Express will save 40,000 jobs

United Parcel Service said its plan to take over U.S. air shipments for Plantation-based DHL Express will preserve competition and 40,000 U.S. jobs.

The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing in Washington on competition in the package-delivery industry. UPS and DHL are still negotiating an agreement, Wallace said. Malcolm Berkley, a UPS spokesman, said before the hearing there is no timetable for reaching a deal.

UPS is trying to blunt criticism from Ohio lawmakers and labor-union leaders that its plan with DHL will harm competition and cost jobs. UPS said May 28 it was working an agreement to take over shipments from two DHL vendors with a hub in Wilmington, Ohio.

Removing business from existing DHL vendors, Miami-based Astar Air Cargo and Ohio-based ABX, will cost 10,000 jobs, said John Prater, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, in testimony. Prater said his union represents 500 Astar pilots.

UPS Capital offers small businesses new global trade finance solution (U.S)

UPS Capital, the financial services arm of UPS, is offering a new service – UPS Capital Cargo FinanceSM – enables small U.S. importers to use their in-transit UPS shipments as collateral for loans, reducing the need to rely on paper-intensive letters of credit to finance international trade transactions.

UPS Capital Cargo Finance is designed for U.S. companies with annual revenues up to USD 50 million that import 1-to-10 ocean or air freight containers of goods per month.

Most global trade transactions for small companies are financed via letters of credit or cash in advance, with trading on open account terms typically available only to large companies. While effective, letters of credit are time-intensive and costly. Cash-in-advance transactions can strain cash flow for small companies. Additionally, traditional financial service companies may be hesitant to lend against goods that are in-transit or housed in a foreign location, leaving few options for small businesses that want to participate in global trade.

Ethiopian post office to sign deal with international carriers

As part of a reform program, the Ethiopian Postal Service (EPS) office is set to sign agreements with international carriers, with the view of boosting the postal services, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) of Ethiopia disclosed.

Junedi Sado, Minister of Transport and Communication told journalists on September 1, 2008 that the Postal Service has been undergoing the implementation phase of a Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) in collaboration with the Ethiopian Civil Service Agency for the last nine months.

A source from the Ministry told Capital that working agreement will be signed with international carriers, including DHL, UPS and other big firms in the industry to share destinations for delivery of packages; however the agreement date is still unknown.

Even if EPS is yet to feel the impact of e-mail and other advanced communication technologies on revenue, a study conducted by foreign consultants shows that EPS can no longer sustain itself in the market if not engaged in the financial markets as other national postal enterprises do.

International air express fuel surcharges stable as oil prices sink

DHL, FedEx, UPS and TNT are keeping their fuel surcharges for air express shipments generally stable in September against a background of falling oil prices, CEP-Research analysis shows. In recent months, fuel surcharges had risen rapidly to the constantly increasing fuel prices.

However, fuel costs are now sinking again due to the weakening demand for oil products over the past four weeks, the news agency Reuters reported. The decreasing demand for oil products is reported to be due to rising concerns about the continuously worsening economy.

The four leading express carriers calculate their fuel surcharges based on indexes showing the previous month’s oil price level and announce them in advance for the following month. The surcharges thus reflect the oil prices of two months ago and do not fully reflect the current sharp downward trend in oil prices.
