UPS Strengthens Air Network in Mexico

New Airbus 300-600 to Increase UPS Air Cargo Capacity by 66 Percent

UPS announced the integration of an Airbus A300-600 freighter aircraft to service the Mexican market.

As of July 29, the Airbus 300-600’s route includes Mexico City and will become a key element in the growth of UPS’s express package and international air cargo services in central Mexico.

With the arrival of the A300-600, which replaces a smaller capacity Boeing 757-200, UPS has increased its international air cargo capacity by 66 percent to address the growing needs of its Mexican customers. The new aircraft will fly five times a week from Worldport, UPS’s all-points international air hub in Louisville, Ky., to Mexico City.

With the aircraft change and increased capacity, UPS is reaffirming its commitment to Mexico by investing in the infrastructure necessary to ensure that Mexican businesses can reach global markets. UPS provides a robust express package and international air cargo portfolio that includes UPS Worldwide ExpressSM, UPS Express FreightSM, UPS Air Freight DirectSM and UPS Air Freight ConsolidatedSM.

The deployment of the A300-600 is just the latest in a series of actions by UPS to strengthen its operations in Mexico, most recently by opening the UPS Center in Villahermosa, Tabasco, earlier this month.

Boom in Czechs purchasing American internet goods

The number of parcels arriving in the Czech Republic from the United States has shot up dramatically, with Czechs taking advantage of internet shopping and the strength of the crown.

Czech postal service is being inundated with parcels arriving from the United States. The postal service has handled over 120,000 packages arriving from the states in the first six months of this year alone – that is up from 70,000 during the same period last year. Ivo Mravinac is a spokesperson for Czech Post, he thinks the glut of incoming packages is down purely to economics:

“The dollar has taken a big hit against the crown and Czechs have done two things. One, they have become increasingly interested in internet shopping and two, they have realized that they can make big savings buying foreign goods, especially from the United States. And this has had a knock-on effect on the number of parcels we are receiving from America. In May 2007, we received 4,900 parcels from America, in May 2008, that number was up to 7,500.”

Couriers such as DHL and UPS back up Mr Mravinac’s statistics. DHL says it has experienced a 99 percent rise in the number of American parcels it handles.

Obama and McCain take up DHL Wilmington cuts as campaign issue (U.S)

US presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain yesterday 29th July, turned DHL’s planned closure of its Wilmington air hub and its proposed cooperation with UPS into a top-level campaign issue. More than 8,000 jobs would be lost in a key political battleground amid growing fears of a US recession. Separately, pilots of DHL airlift supplier Astar Air Cargo took further legal action against the planned DHL-UPS airlift deal.

Obama, who discussed the DHL issue with Ohio officials earlier this month, yesterday wrote to the White House Domestic Policy Council calling on the US justice department to investigate the DHL-UPS agreement for potential anti-trust issues, and urging government support to help DHL workers find new jobs should the deal go ahead.

The Republican candidate, John McCain, issued a statement saying he supported the demand for the proposed DHL-UPS deal to be reviewed by federal and state agencies “for any potential violations of applicable law”. He also favoured government assistance for DHL workers who lost their jobs.

The statements were welcomed by Wilmington mayor David Raizk who commented that since Ohio was such a critical state “in some ways, the road to the presidency leads through Wilmington”. The “ Save The Jobs” coalition of community leaders and DHL Wilmington workers had previously called on both Obama and McCain to visit the hub to talk directly with affected staff. McCain will visit Wilmington in early August, according to the Dayton Daily News.

TNT 2nd quarter results

TNT NV slumped as much as 11 percent after second-quarter profit fell short of analyst estimates and it said 2008 earnings will be at the low end of a forecast range.

The shares declined as much as 2.61 euros to 21.37 euros in Amsterdam after TNT said today net income dropped to 205 million euros (USD 322 million), or 55.9 cents a share, from 244 million euros, or 63 cents, a year earlier. Profit missed the 224 million-euro median estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Sales rose 4.5 percent to 2.81 billion euros.

TNT experienced slowing growth in deliveries of air express packages as customers moved to cheaper road-based options, amid soaring fuel prices, echoing trends at competitors such as United Parcel Service Inc. The strength of the euro against other currencies hurt profit by 7 million euros. TNT said 2008 earnings will be at the “low end” of its outlook as Europe’s economy soften.

The Dutch company’s stock rose 30 percent in the previous two weeks on media reports that FedEx Corp., the second-largest U.S. package-shipping company, might buy the company. FedEx was in preliminary talks to buy TNT, the Financial Times said July 12. The two companies had “low-level” talks about a takeover recently, though the discussions didn’t lead the U.S. company to make an offer, the Wall Street Journal reported last week. TNT and FedEx declined to comment on the reports.

TNT shares were down 2.21 euros, or 9.2 percent, to 21.77 euros at 12:36 p.m.

Chief Executive Officer Peter Bakker declined during a news conference today to comment on the reports. He added that the Dutch company would review any “serious” takeover proposal.

TNT reiterated a forecast that the express division’s Dutch and international operations will generate “high single-digit” sales growth this year, excluding acquisitions, and that earnings before interest and taxes as a proportion of sales will be in the low double-digit percentage range. Mail-unit revenue will rise by a low single-digit percentage, also excluding takeovers, producing an operating margin of about 16.5 percent, TNT said, repeating earlier targets.

“The sharp rise in fuel prices during the quarter and the general economic outlook have impacted both our customers and us,” Bakker said in the statement.

Preview of second quarter: Deutsche Post World Net

Although there was some evidence of market growth slowing in Air Freight Forwarding and Express in the second quarter, Deutsche Post World Net still showed strong growth in underlying EBIT of around 18 percent. On an underlying basis all divisions met or exceeded last year’s second-quarter results.
Revenue growth has been increased by higher fuel costs that were recovered from customers. At the same time, foreign exchange effects continued to reduce revenue growth compared with the year-earlier period.
The revenue increase before foreign exchange effects was approximately 9 percent in the second quarter and reported revenue increased by about 4 percent.
Based on the first-half results and assuming no significant worsening of the global economy, the Group is maintaining its full-year guidance for 2008 and expects underlying EBIT of 4.1 billion euros.
While the U.S. air express market continues to soften, measures to restructure DHL Express U.S. are on track and negotiations with UPS are making satisfactory progress. An update on this matter will be issued after the conclusion of negotiations with UPS.
The full set of half-year accounts will be released on July 31, 2008 at 07:00 CEST. A press conference with Chief Executive Officer Frank Appel and Chief Financial Officer John Allan will be held at 10 a.m. CEST. An investor call will be held at 14:00 CEST.
