FedEx expects to win market share from Deutsche Post's DHL in the U.S.

FedEx Corp expects to win substantial market share from Deutsche Post World Net AG. Express unit DHL in the United States after its German peer decided to quit air-freight shipments and cut down on its ground capacities.

‘We really act on the assumption that customers will feel it when DHL scraps a third of its network,’ Michael Muehlberger, deputy head of FedEx’s Central and Eastern European operations told Financial Times Deutschland.

FedEx holds some 30 percent market share in the U.S. express market, compared with DHL’s 6 percent, according to estimates.

DHL’s loss-making U.S. operations are to tie up in domestic and international airfreight shipments with United Parcel Service Inc.

It will also reduce excess capacities of its U.S. express ground infrastructure by some 30 percent to adapt it to shipment volumes, and will expand cooperation with the U.S. Postal Service in sparsely-populated areas.

Muehlberger confirmed FedEx was in talks with Deutsche Post over a possible tie-up, but declined to provide details on why talks failed.

UPS offers new shipping options for healthcare customers

UPS announced a significant expansion of its capabilities for handling and managing the shipment of temperature-sensitive medical items, including around-the-clock intervention when necessary to utilize refrigeration or replenish dry ice.
The new suite of time- and temperature-sensitive capabilities has been developed for the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device industries. Targeted particularly to global clinical trials, UPS is facilitating the quick movement of test medicines, specimens, supplies, testing kits and accompanying documents to locations worldwide along with convenient UPS Returns® processing options for international shipments.
The latest answer to the industry’s unique needs involves UPS Proactive ResponseSM, which provides a powerful monitoring engine for proactive, around-the-clock attention to help ensure product integrity. The contract service, available in 72 countries, includes dry ice replenishment or refrigeration at select air gateway facilities and intervention in the event of unexpected delays.

UPS Freight extends reliability guarantee to Canada

The new reliability guarantee, offered at no additional cost, applies to direct shipments between points in the United States (48 contiguous states) and points served by UPS Freight service centers in Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Windsor and Winnipeg. It is being offered at a time of continued strong trade growth between the two countries; the U.S. Transportation Department says surfacetransportation trade totaled USD 45 billion in February, up 18 pct over the prior year.
The on-time service guarantee is available effective June 30 for less-than-truckload (LTL) customers on both sides of the border who ship using the current UPS Freight UPGF525 tariff. The new guarantee promises that customers can request a waiver of their freight charges if their shipment fails to arrive as scheduled. Detailed terms of the guarantee can be found in the tariff.
UPS Freight’s Canadian service includes: a pre-arrival system that speeds clearance at border crossings, minimizing delays; electronic transmission of customs documentation; complete online tracking from origin to destination with instant access to all customs documents, and customs delay alerts and 24-hour access to all shipping information.
Since acquiring the former Overnite Transportation Co. in April 2005, UPS has enhanced UPS Freight’s service portfolio and reliability, optimized its delivery network and invested significantly in new technology. As a result, the LTL and truckload carrier is aligned with the global operations and performance standards of UPS’s small package and supply chain services.

UPS South Africa introduce 'Diad' service

UPS South Africa has introduced the Delivery Information Acquisition Device (Diad), which allows customers, through the Internet or a UPS call centre, to track their parcels’ position within the global UPS network chain.
Diad III is a hand-held computer scanner used by courier drivers to simultaneously capture and transmit real-time delivery information. It represents one of the fastest package-tracking systems in the world and will assist in the 3,5-million package queries received daily from UPS customers.
In the traditional supply services chain, the information on labels on packages has to be manually filled out. UPS industrial engineering manager for East and sub-Saharan Africa Christian Helleputte says UPS uses ‘smart’ package load data labels which have coded information on them, including a bar code that records a scanning, and a postal bar code which is linked to vehicle loading information.
Manual labels require employees to physically fill out information, with data being captured by an employee within an organisation. With the Diad system, Helleputte notes, UPS installs software in customers’ facilities, or on a computer, and the customers will duly load this information onto their own computer systems.

The mainframe technology of Diad can display all logistical information, including the time of departure of a parcel, the time of delivery, and how many stops are made during the day, which allows a customer to track the whereabouts of a parcel through the delivery chain. Further, it can also work out the best, most direct routes for package delivery.

UPS also has plans to launch GSS, a wireless scanner that is placed on a driver’s finger, in the third quarter of this year.

ABX Air says DHL plan would cost 6,000 ABX jobs

The president of ABX Air said a plan by DHL to hire United Parcel Service Inc. as its air cargo carrier in the United States is expected to cost 6,000 ABX workers their jobs at a freight hub in this southwest Ohio city.

ABX Air President John Graber told the Wilmington News Journal for a story Thursday that ABX Air’s night sort operations would be eliminated under the plan.

Graber and other ABX Air executives have been meeting with employees to tell them about the effects of the DHL plan if DHL succeeds in reaching a contract agreement with UPS.

The night airfreight operations would no longer be needed because UPS has its own system, he said.

DHL is the struggling U.S.-based express shipping unit of German postal service Deutsche Post AG. DHL contracts with ABX Air to operate the hub.

Messages were left at DHL Thursday and at ABX Air, a unit of Air Transport Services Group Inc., seeking comment from Graber. ABX Air spokeswoman Beth Huber said he was unavailable.

Huber said DHL told ABX Air officials Tuesday that it was going to reduce the aircraft it would need from the ABX Air fleet by 39 jets over a period of 12 to 18 months. She also said DHL said it was in negotiations with UPS, but that a deal had not been completed and ABX Air couldn’t speculate on it.

Graber told the News Journal that he projects ABX Air would have a work force of about 900 to 1,000 in Wilmington if the restructuring is implemented. ABX Air currently has about 7,000 employees at the DHL Air Park in Wilmington.
