Thai SMEs driving UPS sales growth

UPS expects higher growth from its Thai business next year, driven by a stronger economy after the Dec 23 election. Thai small and medium-sized companies, which have a tendency to export more, have been key drivers for UPS growth, according to Steve Okun, Senior Vice-President for UPS Asia Pacific.

UPS has reported double-digit growth rates for four years in a row despite the strong baht, which should have had a bigger impact on its international package delivery service.

Even in the face of the economic slowdown, the company expects the growth to continue this year.

Around half of its business activities in Thailand are driven by SMEs, as well as auto-parts makers, and apparel and jewellery industries.

To expand its SME client base, UPS has joined with the US Department of Commerce to promote trade between the US and Thai SMEs through a symposium called ”Moving Thailand Forward” held yesterday.

Thailand is the first country with which Washington has initiated promotion of SME trading activities.

Business matching activities and product sourcing are provided under the programme as well.

Washington sees Thailand as one of its key trade partners. The country ranked 15th in terms of export value, at USD 20 billion per year, while imports from US stand at $7 billion per year.

The US government also aims to assist American SMEs in expanding their businesses in Thailand to reduce the US’s trade deficit with the country.

UPS had earlier expected 50 companies to join the programme but so far 150 SMEs have already registered for the programme with the US Embassy in Thailand, said Mr Okun.

By linking with the US Department of Commerce, UPS could provide additional services to its SME clients beyond shipping services.

UPS Freight launches reliability guarantee

Starting with the new year, UPS Freight will back its on-time performance reliability with the same type of service guarantee that long has been enjoyed by UPS’s small package customers.

The on-time service promise will be available Jan. 2 to less-than-truckload (LTL) customers who ship using the current UPS Freight 560 tariff in the continental United States. This new guarantee promises that customers can request a waiver of their freight charges if their shipment doesn’t arrive on time.

Since acquiring the former Overnite Transportation Co. in 2005, UPS has enhanced UPS Freight’s service portfolio and reliability, optimized its delivery network and invested significantly in assets, people and technology. As a result, the LTL and truckload carrier (TL) is aligned with the global operations and performance standards of UPS’s small package and supply chain services.

New in 2008 will be enhancements to UPS WorldShipTM and UPS Internet Freight Shipping that address the specific needs of freight shippers. UPS WorldShip is a software suite that integrates customers’ existing databases, eliminating the time-consuming task of re-entering names and addresses, while providing access to all the functions of UPS.com including delivery verification and tracking.

In 2008, in addition to being able to create a Bill of Lading (BOL) for LTL shipments, UPS WorldShip users will be able to send e-mail notifications, save BOLs for later completion, import commodities and view their negotiated rates. UPS also will make it easier for non-technical staff to integrate their business systems with WorldShip through a new ‘wizard’ feature that guides customers through the integration process using step-by-step instructions.

UPS & DHL to add flights in the U.S.

UPS and DHL both intend to add extra flights in the U.S. during the upcoming holiday peak season, and UPS will lease 10 Boeing 747s, as well as smaller aircraft to temporarily boost its fleet.

UPS plans to wet-lease 32 extra aircraft, just a couple more than it had to lease for last year’s holiday season. Included in the total are seven Boeing 747s from Evergreen, three 747s from Southern Air Transport, six DC-8s from Air Transport International and four 727-200s from Kalitta Air. Other leasing companies will also be involved. These aircraft will be used throughout the network, although most heavily on domestic U.S. routes. UPS plans to add 423 flights per day between Thanksgiving and Christmas (DAILY, Nov. 1).

DHL — which has a much smaller U.S. operation — will require more than 425 extra flights spread over the Nov. 20 to Dec. 23 period. This will give it a cumulative total of about 8,000 flights in this five-week span. DHL contracts with ABX Air and Astar Air Cargo for its air operations in the U.S.

UPS debuts customs clearance and international returns solutions for small businesses

As the world becomes “flatter” and globalization drives new opportunities for international commerce, how do small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs) jump on the bandwagon?

The Internet allows any business to gather orders and process them across borders very easily at low cost. For SMBs in the U.S., currency fluctuation are working in their favor for overseas commerce. And such free-trade drivers as the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), and World Trade Organization (WTO) measures are making it easier for goods to flow around the globe — at least in theory.

The reality is that small business operators need to jump through complex hoops — especially in a post-9/11 world — to actually move their goods across borders, and back again the event of returns. Recognizing the opportunity and the challenge, UPS in early 2008 is debuting several new services to help SMBs join the Fortune 500 when it comes to expanded markets and international commerce.

UPS is helping to change the face of global shipping by being a market innovator with a solution called UPS Paperless Invoice. It uses UPS applications and the Internet to define commercial shipment invoice data for border clearance, eliminating the customer’s chore of manually applying three paper invoice copies to each shipment. UPS will also soon deliver UPS Returns in 98 countries so shippers can use digital technology and UPS solutions to prepare the proper return labels so goods can be easily returned back across borders when necessary.
