UPS faces protective challenges with India

India’s postal service wants to rein in international express couriers doing business in India, in what many here see as a backward step in the liberalization of the country’s economy.
A recent proposal to be reviewed by Parliament gives the postal service exclusive rights for express delivery of letters weighing up to 300 grams within the country, virtually shielding the government agency from competition.
The proposal also blocks foreign ownership of express couriers operating in India and requires large private courier services to fork over 10 percent of their profits to a fund that helps the government improve its delivery service to the country’s rural areas.
For now, UPS is hoping its retail stores bring more brand-name recognition in a country where many people still go to streetside letter-wallahs who type up their correspondence on manual typewriters.
Already, international express carriers are part of a new trade route as millions of Indian expatriates living in the U.S. and Canada use companies like UPS to send an endless stream of birthday and wedding gifts, as well as the latest technological gadgets that might be hard to find in India. In return, Indian families here send their relatives abroad hard-to-find Indian spices, textiles and other gifts from the homeland, turning international companies like UPS into the modern-day equivalent of ancient trade routes. The UPS Store chain offers packaging and express shipping, as well as digital printing, office supplies and ticketing services for Jet Airways, one of India’s largest airlines.

DHL wishes to further partnership with Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation

DHL Vietnam has shrugged off the idea of setting up a totally foreign-owned firm in favor of expanding cooperation with the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT).

VNPT started acting as agents for DHL in 1988 with the first bilateral deal inked in Ho Chi Minh City. The Germany-based company got permission to set up a joint venture with a 51 percent stake with the largest telecommunications group in Vietnam in January 2007 in order to meet ever-growing market demands.

Vietnam has allowed a foreign company to hold a 51 pct stake in an express delivery joint venture as part of its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, wholly foreign-owned express companies have to wait until 2012 to go into operation.

VNPT is quite a familiar service provider to the Vietnamese with a wide agent network covering 52 cities and provinces across Vietnam.

Baxter said his company with a market share of 40 percent in Vietnam is consistently experiencing double digit growth exceeding 20 percent in Vietnam as the manufacturing sector continues to grow, and Vietnam realizes its export potential.

DHL has already kicked off a 14 million USD project to build two major service centers in southern Dong Nai province and Hanoi and to purchase a new fleet of vehicles. The move is expected to help DHL rival around 20 other foreign market players including TNT, Fedex, UPS and JNE.

TNT of Australia has just brought to service the trans-Asia road network (ARN) in Vietnam after adding 6 more million EUR to its project kicked off in 2005. After the first phase with total budget of 2 million EUR, the ARN project created a road linking Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

UPS says Teamsters talks temporarily recessed

United Parcel Service Inc. said on Monday contract talks with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters are temporarily recessed while the company awaits information from pension funds that cover its workers.

The national committees met last week. Talks on local issues and contract riders are continuing, Black said, adding he does not know when UPS will get the pension fund information.

Last week, the Teamsters said contract negotiations with UPS were “temporarily suspended” because the company was unable to respond to the union’s demands. The union said it is willing to resume negotiations with UPS as soon as the package carrier makes a proposal on health care coverage and retirement benefits.

UPS and the union representing some 250,000 workers kicked off negotiations in September 2006 for a new deal to replace a six-year contract set to expire in 2008. That contract is the largest labor pact in the U.S. private sector.
