Shippers prepare for the seasonal rush of packages

UPS plans to ramp up its Inland Empire operations for the shopping season.

The package shipper will hire 900 additional workers for its San Bernardino, Ontario, Riverside, Temecula, Barstow, Blythe, Victorville and Yucca Valley operations, UPS spokeswoman Page Dossey said.

DHL will deliver more than 2 million packages on its peak day in the United States, Dec. 20.

DHL hired hundreds of part-time package handlers to help meet the holiday demand, said John Cameron, DHL USA executive vice president of operations, in a Nov. 21 release. DHL added 300 daily truck routes and 63 new domestic flights a week to its regular network schedules for the holiday rush.

DHL employs 300 people at its 262,000 square-foot, USD70 million West Coast distribution center located at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside.

FedEx will extend employee hours to meet the holiday package delivery demand, spokesman Matt Ceniceros said in a previous interview.

FedEx likely will hire a small number of temporary package handlers for its ground operations to meet the holiday demand, he said.

Headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., FedEx employs more than 260,000 people.

FedEx will handle 9.8 million packages on Dec. 18. That will be the most packages FedEx has handled on a single day since it was founded in 1973.

The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. offer holiday shipping expertise

When it comes to shipping holiday gifts, there really is a “naughty” way and a “nice” way to do it. And after 26 years in the packing and shipping business, the pros at The UPS Store® and Mail Boxes Etc.® have seen some fairly “naughty” packages in their day.

“Although people have the best of intentions, we have to perform a number of ‘interventions’ each year,” says The UPS Store franchisee Willa Levin of Royal Oak, Mich.

Levin recommends the following tips for ensuring your package is delivered in “nice” condition:

Get a good start by using a new box specifically designed for shipping, not moving. Dumpster diving for old boxes is a fast trip to the naughty list.

Follow through by using the right packing materials, including a minimum of two inches of bubble cushioning and/or packing peanuts. Old clothes, crumpled newspaper and real popcorn aren’t only naughty, they’re nasty.

Before closing the box, place an extra mailing label inside just in case the outside label gets damaged. Hint: Santa appreciates good penmanship.

Add the finishing touch with clear, professional-grade packing tape and a fresh label with both the sender’s and recipient’s names clearly printed. Sorry fellas, duct tape will land you at the top of the naughty list. Packages wrapped in paper or tied with string also are a no-no.

If you’re looking to score bonus points, use UPS® so you can track your packages. Then you’ll know someone was home to receive your gifts. It’s a nice thing to do.

DHL mulls pricing review

DHL Express said it is reviewing its pricing policies for the next two years.

This, after rivals United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) and FedEx Corp. have announced plans to increase their respective rates for package delivery service. Starting Jan. 1, 2007, UPS and FedEx express delivery unit FedEx Express will increase service rates by 4.9% and 3.5%, respectively for US customers.

For the local market, however, representatives from UPS and FedEx said the actual timeline and amount of service rate increase for the Philippine market are currently being prepared.

“As all businessmen must, DHL will periodically increase rates to reflect rising costs of operations as well as investment,” DHL Express Philippines country manager Lawrence Llamzon told BusinessWorld.

TNT strengthens foothold in RI's express delivery market

Urip Hudiono, The Jakarta Post/Jakarta

TNT is one of the world’s largest express delivery and logistics services, competing against DHL, UPS and Federal Express.

Established in Australia, the now Netherlands-based company has been operating in Indonesia since 1979. It has been expanding its network in Indonesia since last year and provides special delivery services for its customers. The Jakarta Post spoke to TNT country general manager Peter Langley.

Question: What is Indonesia’s express delivery and logistics services market like?”

Answer: We’re in markets all around the world, some of the markets are growing, and some of the other markets are growing even much more.

And we look at places like China, Vietnam and Indonesia. They’re places we need to be, because we know those markets are growing very quickly, for import, export and domestically.

We want to be here, and we want to grow our infrastructure. Indonesia is a very important platform as part of our the global network.

Indonesia also has a very big market for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). I come from 10 years in the express delivery business in Australia, and the SME business is very big there, and I come here, and it’s even bigger.
